A lot has been said of Fisher and Elko, even Terry Price. I know that Fisher does the playcalling and that he gets input from Dickey, but is there anything that talks about Dickey's impact on A&M? What exactly does he do, and how big/important/essential is he for A&M's success?

He helps in the development of the QB, he recruits, and most importantly he helps game plan. I'm sure there are times within the course of each game where Jimbo wants input from him, but his primary value comes from weekly game preparation. There was a quote a few months ago, can't remember where, of a coach that said how shocked he was to see the extent of Dickey's influence on A&M's offense this past season.

I think playcalling is always overblown. If you can get 11 guys to focus and improve in practice Monday through Friday it shouldn't matter what plays you call Saturday as long as they execute them.

Yes.

But as counter evidence I present the smoke draw and option to the short side of the field.

I think that's mostly true, but scheme, game-planning, and then the actual in-game play-calling absolutely makes a difference outside of execution. For example, even if every player on offense executes a running play to perfection, but the defense stacks the box - there's a very high likelihood that play fails to produce anything other than a couple yards, if that.

Did that article go in-depth? I've just seen a lot of accolades for Elko, Price, and Fisher (deservedly so) but not much for Dickey

During the game, Dickey is up in the box looking at the things that Jimbo can't see. For example, Dickey will look at something in the front 7 while Jimbo is watching the safeties or vice versa. Jimbo will ultimately decide what play to run, but you can guarantee he is relying on Dickey for a significant amount of input when he makes his decision.

And playcalling absolutely does matter no matter how much talent you have. If you want to debate that, go watch reruns of the last 5 years of our offense under Spav and Mazzone.

True, but plenty of times there were plays to be made even in mazzone's offense but blocks were missed, routes run poorly or qb made bad throws or decisions

Execution is still more important than the actual play calls

If you execute plays properly, more often than not it will result in positive plays regardless of play call

From what I understand Dickey helped implement some of the RPO wrinkles and newer downfield passing elements(air raid). Jimbo's used them before, but it's more about how well those elements synergize with the other principles of the offense(i.e. zone run blocking, WR option routes, QB called blocking protections, etc...).

A weakness of the Mazzone offense is the defenses could dictate the play from their own alignment as they'd force our QB to make the read he was supposed to and then blow up the play. There's even an ESPN segment of Bama's front 7 reading run/pass based on our OL alignment where the Center dictated the blocking.

With Jimbo's Offense they had no idea when a zone read was coming and couldn't force a specific read because Mond had other keys to read off of. It's also why Jimbo's offense has reputation of perhaps being the most difficult system to learn in college ball for QBs. Mond's making reads and calls for every position in the offense. It's daunting but the offense modulates to attack actual defensive exposures over perceived reads. With Dickey, D-Coordinators can't just dust off the old methods of stopping the option and TE seams because the new wrinkles will come into play.

I'm most curious of DD's recruiting abilities

I think it extremely important. If it wasn't he'd let a GA call plays.
Does anyone really think it wasn't important in overtime against LSU.

Of course it is. If you've played one series of competitive football, you know it is.

Unfortunately I can't find anything on it. I just remember it being discussed on a thread here on TexAgs a little while back - it might have been someone's personal conversation with a coach.

I vote Dickey as the winner of the "Josh Reynolds Ghost / perennially underrated coach of the year" award. Never gets the coverage or credit, but consistently delivers.

If you want to talk about a coach, at least spell his name correctly.
