Nick Saban. He only wins b/c he recruits the best players in the world.

Vol alumni here. As bad as Butch was, he wasn't a patch to his predecessor, Derrick Dooley. The only thing he had going for him was his daddy's name.

Pelini brothers

So Bo is a troglodyte psychopath and his brother is an even crazier, drug-using buffoon. Despite this, those two did manage to deliver a near .750 record at Nebraska with 7 bowl appearances and 4 bowl wins. 9-4 was the worst Nebraska fans ever saw under Bo Pelini.

Husker fans probably think back to that stretch fondly right now.

Possibly John Blake, University of Oklahoma should get a mention.

From his Wiki,"... He compiled a career record of 12-22 which is the worst three-year stretch in The University of Oklahoma football history. Despite being in way over his head as a college head coach, Blake was an admirable recruiter. He was responsible for bringing in more than half of the 2000 championship team's 22 starters, ... . "

Given the stretching of the topic to include people like Bobby Petrino, I'm surprised that Art Briles hasn't been mentioned.

Fran, Fran the Field Goal Man riding Gary Patterson to Alabama & then A&M.
Kevin Sumlin riding Johnny and Kliff Kingsbury at A&M and now at Arizona with Khalil Tate.

That pause after the initial question is all too telling. I almost expected it to follow with, "some."
Considering Saban and other coaches have done this it isn't high level.

Shyster / is a slang word for someone who acts in a disreputable, unethical, or unscrupulous way, especially in the practice of law, sometimes also politics or business. Wikipedia

By definition, the answer is Art Briles.

It's has to be Rich Rodriguez. After winning at West Virginia, he went on to ruin Michigan with a .405 percent winning percentage. He broke their 33 year bowl streak and didn't get them bowl eligible until his third and last season where they got crushed by Mississippi State. On top of that, he also had major NCAA violations. After getting fired from Michigan, he went on Arizona where he has some success until his secretary sued him for sexual harassment and he was fired.

Thank you. It has very little to do with success, in fact, some would argue the converse (i.e. "nice guys finish last"). If you're gonna use the term correctly, then it's more appropriate for guys who sold their soul for success, so guys like Briles, Urban, etc would top the charts.

Blending the real definition with the OP's, my #1 is Rich Rod.

Going by the unethical definition:

1. Joe Pa for letting hundreds of children get raped
2. Briles for letting dozens of women get raped
3. The hoops coach at baylor who covered up the murder
------
Everything after that is child's play.

And is why I will also bring up Urban Meyer. He faked a heart condition to get out of Florida after he lost track of all the bodies people like Hernandez were creating. Then suddenly got better when the Ohio State Job opened up.

Fran has to be up there. If not shyster then a fraud. The only reason he got the Alabama and A&M jobs was because of LaDainian Tomlinson success which carried TCU. If it hadn't been for LT, Fran would have been exposed at TCU. Instead, he leveraged LTs success to land the Bama job where he had moderate success for 2 years with existing players and left before being exposed. He had no success at SW TX State or New Mexico before taking the TCU job and couldn't make it at TX State after A&M. The guy never even played football so how he even became a coach is a mystery.

It has got to be Charlie Weiss.

Think that dude is still drawing a paycheck from Kansas.
The Spring after Weiss left KU, they had <30 scholarship players of the 85 allowed.....they still have not gotten the full 85 signed.

Pete Carroll
Committed serious violations for his entire tenure. Entire seasons and championships have had to be vacated from the record books. As well as the only Heisman winner to give back his trophy and not be recognized as such. When the heat started coming down, he bailed for the NFL; leaving succeeding USC teams to deal with multiple sanctions and probation for years to come. They have never been the same.

A&M completed a $500 MM stadium renovation under Sumlin. Let's not pretend some darn good things didn't happen in the KDS era.

now his last year was bad. Won't argue with that. But 2012 to 2016 is among the best 5-year stretch in program history on numerous levels

The program became worse each consecutive year. Sherman built the team, Johnny built the stadium, Sumlin cashed in.

As far as being disliked by his players, coaches, secretaries, and the people who knew him well it's easily Todd Graham. Second is probably Lou Holtz.
Holtz took 5 different programs to bowl games. Won a national championship. One of the legends of the past 40 years.

Really stupid to put him in this conversation.

Anyone seriously answering Kevin Sumlin has either never paid attention to College Football outside of A&M or is just being an ass. The guy had a ceiling as a coach, and I'm glad we have Jimbo Fisher, but he didn't wreck our program. He recruited well, and Fisher was able to take over a talented roster. He never finished with a losing season here despite playing in the toughest conference in college football.

Let's compare that to Charlie Weis:
His first season at Notre Dame ended with the Irish at 9-3, which is pretty good, but he was given a 10 year, $30-40 million extension after 7 games. That was in 2005 when Pete Carroll, in the midst of his USC dynasty, was making $1.5 million/year. They started his 2nd season ranked #2 in the country, but lost 3 games and finished 17th. His 3rd season ended at 3-9, the worst record ever in the history of their football program. His 4th season they went 7-6. and his 5th season they went 6-6. Once he was fired Notre Dame still had to pay him for 5 more years and $19 million.

He then took over at Kansas, and in his first year on the job dismissed 29 players. He managed to compile a record of 6-22 before being fired in his 3rd season. His buyout there was $5.6 million.

This brings Weis's career coaching record to 41-49, with a total compensation of $64.5 million. Kevin Sumlin was 51-26 here, which isn't even in the same ballpark. Hell, if you want to compare Weis to an A&M coach that was a shyster, you should probably pick the coach that was actually bad: Franchione.

seriously. We fired Kevin Sumlin because we got tired of mid-pack finishes and 8 win seasons. If you are going to be mad about Sumlin and inconsistency, then he probably trails Malzhahn on that metric (who is even more inconsistent with big wins and huge losses).

Doesn't really fit this criteria.

Teams have caught up to him, but he never rode a single season. He was very good 6-8 years ago for multiple seasons.
