I don't buy that the trees are being killed off by this year's drought. First, this is nowhere near as bad as 2011. In 2011, it didn't rain... at all... the entire year... anywhere in Texas:
If the trees survived 2011, it is likely a different cause for their decline now.
Just for comparison, here is this year's drought at different points in time:
Second, if the trees are that old, that means they survived the 1950s in Texas. You might recall the 1950s from this little gem:
The three driest years in the 50s (51, 54, and 56) were the worst droughts in 600 years. And the trees survived.
