just finished watching the Holiday bowl and the whipping that the wrecking crew gave BYU.

Lavell Edwards had a lot to say to Toledo and ignored Slocum after the game. Did Slocum or Toledo ever comment on this or did they let it go and simply move on ?

No......Edwards was a total dick after the game but he brought it on himself. Never a big fan of piling on an obviously outmanned opponent but in this case it was perfectly warranted

I remembered the BYU players being cocky and giving the Ags a lot of bulletin board material. They thought they deserved a better bowl
Opponent. I didn't remember their coaching staff doing it but I suppose they allowed it.

Also, wasn't BYU accused up running up the score on several outmatched teams earlier that same year? Yeah, what a deek!

Slocum gave an interview when Edwards retired and mentioned that they were at some sort of coach's retreat together not too long after the bowl game. RC couldn't find his golf clubs and walked out to the course to find Edwards carrying them for him. Edwards apologized for his behavior at the bowl game and all was forgiven.

That game was rediculous. BYU was talking so much trash before the game. Totality of the beat down was astounding. BOTH SHOULDERS!

I fast forwarded through the offense possessions to watch the defense.

He was more than just a dick; he was a hypocritical *******. During the 1990 season, BYU had wins with scores of 62-34, 52-9, 55-31, 54-7, 45-14 and 45-10. I see a 43 and 47 point margin there compared to our 51 point margin. I'd love to hear an explanation for a 4 and 8 point difference, especially when the losing team's QB is knocked out of the game. The year before, BYU scored 70 against Utah. I'm sure there was no overly emotional motivation to score that many on one's biggest rival -- never happened in history.

According to news reports, it appears he told Toledo to f off.

Quote:

Even Brigham Young Coach LaVell Edwards, normally a gracious man in victories as well as defeats, wasn't quite in the congratulatory mood either. He never shook hands with R.C. Slocum, Texas A&M coach, and instead spoke only with Bob Toledo, offensive coordinator.

Just what exactly did he say?

"Let's just say he didn't have a very good Mormon word for me," Toledo said. "Even if I told you the word, it wouldn't get in your newspaper anyway."

Unfortunately, this game appeared to have a negative impact on Slocum. I've contended for years that he was so stung by the criticism that he played to never even APPEAR to run up the score again. It almost certainly cost us the 2002 tech game and likely other games.

EDIT:

Didn't see this nor did I know about it. If true, then yeah, all is forgotten. I honestly thought it lingered. But his behavior was pretty bad and still deserves criticism.

In the press conference after the game Edwards complained about RC running it up. In RC's pocket was the BYU schedule with their scores--all lopsided as hell.

I lived in San Diego at the time. Just down the road from Jack Murphy Stadium in Mission Valley. San Diego State was there and they were conference rivals with BYU. Hated them worse than anyone. A&M got a lot of love in the media that week.

I sat in an upper corner of the Stadium - in a pretty good seat. I had a trip home to Texas cancel at the last minute so I decided to head down to the stadium. Parked just off stadium grounds by Hwy 8 with a bunch other cars. Bought a scalped ticket.

And got my stereo stolen out of my car, a Blaupunkt I'd bought the week before. That sucked. Went to Bennigans that night in Mission Valley = some San Diego State fans were in there, in town over the holiday. They bought my dinner and two drinks, I
n their words, as thanks for A&M beating BYU. All in all a good night.

You have to at least watch Buckys TD reception.

Our score in the Holiday Bowl was out of respect for the capability of the BYU team and their history of comebacks. Lavell was upset after the game, probably at me, my team and his team. After Detmer was knocked out of the game, they seemed to throw in the towel. Later, Lavell and I became close friends. He was a great coach and man. I played in a coaches golf tournament with him for several years until he passed away. One year, I had Bucky with me to play on my team. I said, hey LAVELL, come over here, I want to introduce you to my old quarterback Bucky Richardson. He said, "I saw enough of him in San Diego one night to last me a lifetime". We had a big laugh.

As a stupid kid I wanted RC replaced. As an adult I know he never had ANYTHING close to the facilities and financial support the last 3 failures have had in spades.

The best recruits were going to Austin and we were hemorrhaging talented assistant coaches on a regular basis. Jimbo Fisher wouldn't have come here in 2002; not with that level of support.

In hindsight it is astonishing some of the Torbrush-esqe jackasses who have enjoyed the full weight of A&M's financial might where RC had so little.

You could argue for and against him. But occasionally I wonder if we just spent 75 million for a guy we might have already had.

Uh...no. Do you think the landscape of college football looked like it does today back in the early 90's? No one was spending 75 million, or anything close to it, for any coach in college football back then. Bobby Bowden broke the $1M/year mark around 95 or 96. Not only that but the facility arms race was just beginning around RC's time. You could argue we were at a disadvantage by the time RC was fired in '02 but certainly not early in his tenure.

The best recruits were going to Austin? Let's check on the sips and see how they did in RC's first 9 years. The best recruits in Texas were going to College Station, not Austin for much of the 90's. Just watch the Holiday Bowl game and count the number of guys who played in the league.

David McWilliams
89: 5-6
90:10-2
91: 5-6 (fired)
John Mackovic
92: 6-5
93: 5-5-1
94: 8-4
95: 10-2-1
96: 8-5
97: 4-7 (fired)

I, too, watched the replay yesterday. The PBP announcer, Shaun somebody, was on a crusade to defame Slocum and the Aggie program for winning so handily. Clearly, he was "all-in" for BYU, and was dying each time the Aggies punked the Cougars.

Pardon my vagueness.

I meant we were losing recruits under Mack Brown who had previously signed with us or out of state.

My whole argument centers around when I was a student - late 90's and early 2000s.

RC always said that once you put in your 2nd and 3rd teamers, they want to do more than 3 yards and a cloud of dust.

He backed up his comments with his actions, in this game, and others. If the starters for the other team couldn't stop the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th, team, then that's on them. I very much agreed with that sentiment, and still agree today. Back then, BYU was VERY famous for outlandish scores over teams outmatched, but it doesn't make any difference, as it applied to every team Slocum played.

my 2 cents.
Hate is how progressives sustain themselves. Without hate, introspection begins to slip into the progressive's consciousness, threatening the progressive with the truth: that their ideas and opinions are illogical, hypocritical, dangerous, and asinine.
This is backed by data.

The Holiday Bowl still ranks as one of my all time favorites. I wish I could find a video of the pre-game coverage. Some of the BYU players had made comments during the prior week that they deserved a better bowl opponent. In the pre-game segment Lee Corso made a comment to the effect of "There is one team that doesn't belong in this game, but it's BYU not A&M." He predicted a big win for us - but I don't think anybody saw the total beat down coming.

PS - also glad to see RC posting here. Coach - thanks for all you did for A&M.

One offensive highlight that i look forward to happening again occurs at the 33:28 mark when we score. FB absolutely destroys BYU player.

None of us posting on this thread (well, except for RC) knows what plays were called and what was changed in the huddle or audibled. Wasn't this Lance Pavlas' last game as an Aggie? If so, can you fault him for trying to throw for touchdowns?

I've been on both sides of a beat down. It sucks when you're getting hammered. When you're doing the hammering, you're just having fun. These were kids and they were told they didn't belong on the same field with BYU and their Heisman QB. Frankly, the Heisman should have gone to Lewis.

I loved watching this again. It was one of my highlight games, both for what we did on offense and defense. I'm looking forward to a return to games like this under Jimbo in a couple of years.

When in the game did we kick the onside kick? I remember an onside kick when we were well ahead but they must have skipped past that.

Thank you. I remember that too. Haven't been able to find it, but I'm pretty sure we did because it was clearly a "WTF is RC doing" moment that stands out in what brain cells I have left after 35 years of following Aggie football. Not knowing at the time the disrespect BYU showed us in the weeks leading up to the game.
