Was at the game (BQ). Old army days when we went to everything but hawaii (and we thought we were going there until just prior). My favorite game in my four years. Watching in later years, i thought lavell dropped the f bomb on rc...and the television commentator pointed out that you could read his lips. Maybe it was toledo he was talking to and I'm misremembering.

I think lewis was doomed by the shot he took at the lsu player out of bounds. Still think he deserved the Heisman. Detmer geek running up the score against a terrible conference and playing 97% of the time rather than being pulled in the 4th quarter so they could pad his stats and win the Heisman was cheap classless ****. RC wouldn't have done that...not to mention the unnecessary injury risk. I thought we ran up the score to make a point or two, to the heisman committee and to byu. And I was proud of that righteous point.

I remember watching it as a kid but didn't remember the final score.

I liked bob Toledo. He had a good run at UCLA, can't remember his qb's name there but he was a good college qb.

I remembered the BYU players being cocky and giving the Ags a lot of bulletin board material. They thought they deserved a better bowl
Opponent. I didn't remember their coaching staff doing it but I suppose they allowed it.
THIS. IIRC, they started the season out hot and by midseason thought they were going to be playing Notre Dame or someone of that stature in the Orange bowl or somewhere.

Then they dropped a couple of games late in the season and wound up playing us. They still thought they should be playing someone "better".

I don't think our players appreciated their opinions.

Cade McNown

I will always hate him because of the comeback in the Cotton Bowl for the 1997 season. We had UCLA on the ropes that game, but gave them a cheap TD right before the half ended, and I still contend to this day that it changed the dynamic of the game.

Our offense also went into ultra conservative "play not to lose" mode in the 2nd half, which meant we didn't score or keep the ball out of UCLA's hands and we ended up losing. That was the biggest beef with Slocum led teams - he was far too conservative on offense (with the exception of the BYU game and a handful of others), and it always seemed to backfire.

Defense back then was more fun to watch than offense.

This is the game that everyone points to as a high point of the WC. But this game always makes me curious what a modern offense would do against the WC. Every clip I see of this game BYU is under center doing a long drop back by the QB. It seems like a QB in shotgun doing quick timing routes would eat this defense up. Then it would be a game of adjustments to see how the defense would respond.

Anyone have a link to a video of that?

I don't, but when looking for it, its the part where after a run lewis gets hit or is tackled out of bounds at the lsu bench. Lsu players take cheap shots...no flag ( tiger stadium...shocker). Lewis comes up swinging on tv. Flag.

When in the game did we kick the onside kick? I remember an onside kick when we were well ahead but they must have skipped past that.

Thank you. I remember that too. Haven't been able to find it, but I'm pretty sure we did because it was clearly a "WTF is RC doing" moment that stands out in what brain cells I have left after 35 years of following Aggie football. Not knowing at the time the disrespect BYU showed us in the weeks leading up to the game.

It was Jackie in '86 vs TCU. Jim Wacker the TCU coach at the time was running his mouth about his high powered offense was going to run over the Ags. Jackie called the onside kick in the 3rd Q when the Ags were up by 50pts. After the game he was asked about it and he said he was worried about the frogs high powered offense was going to come back. The final score was 74-10.

Pretty sure RC kicked an onside kick against BYU as well.

Teasippers are proud of their little howdie doodie pea shooter and they shoot after they score. Our fish took some opportunity to run out and pop it after we scored. The crowd was highly tickled with the sneak assault. It happened more than once over the years.

I watched the whole game last night and there wasn't an onside kick.

There was a lot of the game that was skipped during that replay.

That's why I asked

Seemed like it to me. Id be watching, it would pop to a commercial, then Id be further along

When we couldn't find an offensive player to hit, we'd hit our own. Those WC guys would tackle their own mothers if coach told em to.

Huh. I didn't notice that. Not like I was watching with a laser focus though.

I found the Deseret News article about the game and they didn't mention an onside either in their laundry list of RC's transgressions.

We did not kick an onside that game.

Someone made a tongue-in-cheek comment that you would have to have Texags to know all of the backstory about the bulletin-board material. I know this is just a joke, but to enlighten the young kids who might see it, this is how it worked.

2018 news: A bunch of Internet resources and maybe 2-3 news stories a week in "traditional" outlets.
1990 new: Dallas Morning News, Dallas Times Herald, Houston Chronicle, Houston Post, San Antonio Light, San Antonio Express News, and of course, the Batt. And that's just print. So it's not like we were completely clueless about what was going on. I don't know about you guys, but in my dorm, someone had a subscription to everything and the papers circulated.

Why was their cannon in San Diego for our bowl game?

Completely different dynamic on the defensive side back then. Look at the youtube clip posted - our defensive players were the fastest guys on the field. Back in that time period, coaches didn't automatically put the best athlete on offense like they do today.

The numbers would be different IMO - fewer sacks, more PBU's and INT's, but if that defense with that speed was playing today, they would still be a whale of a defense to play against (not accounting for rule changes).

The '91 defense was the peak of the Wrecking Crew. That was the first of 4 consecutive SWC titles. Straight filthy. Sure, Mike Leach would have run up 400 yards on them, but there would have been 9 sacks, 5 turn-overs, and a final score of 62-24.

I don't know if it was peak WC but it definitely began the serious attention for them. That was the year that Texas, Houston and we all ended the season ranked in the top 20. It's also the year we tied Baylor. That was gross.

I could be wrong, but I really remember an OSK that game. Perhaps we had to rekick or something and they cut it out of the replay.
