It is a good documentary, I vaguely remember the Mitch Mustain phenomenon but didn't pay much attention to it back when it was going on.

I know it's not unique to him and likely applies to almost every coach in the game, but Malzahn will always be a slimy SOB to me after watching that show. Left Mustain out to dry. Mustain didn't do much to help his cause either with some of his poor choices.

Mustain was a diva. Malzahn has always been a puke. But Mustain's mother, Beck Campbell, was a b**** from hell who caused many of the problems, barging into Frank Broyles' office making demands. The "Springdale Mafia" as they were called went after Houston Nutt with a vengeance. According to them Nutt was Satan incarnate. It was a very nasty time in Arkansas football history.

Disclaimer: The Hubs grew up with the Nutt brothers.

I remember Brent Musburger calling a USC game. During mop up time, Mustain went into the game. Musburger started talking about how Mustain and his mother (!) were great people. Mustain immediately threw an INT; it was beautiful!

Mitch Mustain wasn't in Metallica. He was kicked out of Anthrax and founded Slayer.

Living in Arkansas, I had a front row seat to that fiasco. Neither side came off well. Malzahn pimped Mustain and a couple of other five star players to Arkansas for a coaching gig. Nutt was forced to swallow it by Broyles, but made Malzahn's tenure a living hell. The sad fact about Mustain was that he reached his level in high school. At SoCal, he never advanced beyond clip-board holder.

If I were to steal an identity, it wouldn't be that of Mitch Mustain.

Probably Pol Pot or something.

I remember either reading something about this or hearing something about it. Mustain wasn't clean and free by any stretch, but in his defense the kid was used like a $2 hooker so several folks could advance their careers. Never seemed to get a good fair shot, and then went off and sold Xanax on craigslist and got busted when it did look like he was going to get a chance.

The fact that Malzahn wouldn't even comment or be on camera for the documentary tells a lot about his character.

Just a messed up story all around.

Malzahn was Mustain's HS coach. He held Mitch and some other great players from his 7 on 7 team hostage in order to get a job with Nutt at Arkansas. Nutt was in the same position as Sumlin with Kyler Murray. Mustain was an Arkansas boy, Parade All-American in his backyard. He had to take him on whatever grounds necessary. So Malzahn was given a job as co-OC. Rode his players to a first time college gig.

Now also keep in mind that this team had Darren McFadden and Felix Jones in the backfield as well as Peyton Hillis. Very strong running game. That became a bone of contention in the run/pass mix of play-calling. Malzahn thought they ran the ball too much. Nutt disagreed. Malzahn got the Springdale Mafia (where he had been HS coach) on Mustain's behalf and all hell broke loose.

Agree it was all kinds of screwed up but Malzahn was the architect of most of it. He had his pass happy HUNH offense that he had been running (to great success) in high school and 7 on 7 games for several years. With Mustain and Williams, he saw his chance to be elevated into the college ranks. So he used it and used them in the process.

Since that time Malzahn has changed his offense to include more of a running game and not just the QB. Cam Newtons don't come along every year.

LOL. Guess it does. Daddy Nutt (Houston, Sr.) was a basketball coach at the School for the Deaf. Great man. Houston, Jr. was oldest of four sons and they all played BB. They played all comers in basketball which is how The Hubs knew them. Played them often.

He was an insufferable deek, so they kicked him out of the band. Then they dug up Kirk Hammet and never looked back.

EDIT: darn, somebody already made this joke

That was a weird season. Lose the opener to USC 50-14 after only being down 17-14 at the half in a game that Felix Jones fumbles 3 times and McFadden played with a broken toe, then win 10 straight and look like a national championship contender, then lose 3 in a row to end the year.

Lots of drama going on behind the scenes that we didn't know about at the time. To top it all off, the bowl game we lost was to Bielema and Wisconsin. That was the closest we've ever gotten to winning the SEC. if Reggie Fish doesn't fumble that punt return into the endzone...

The story was mildly interesting. I had forgotten a lot of details about Mustain. But this documentary had some of the worst editing I've ever seen.
