Ags were coming off 4 yrs of averaging 3. wins per season (after Stallings' great 1967 season.

Stallings was fired and Bellard, the genius behind the wishbone, hired from t.u.

His first signing class was a complete smash- getting blue chips like we never got before and going toe to toe w biggest programs in country- Simonini, Osborne, Roaches, Pat Thomas, Bubba Bean, Skip Walker, Bujnoch, Fields, Ten Naple....

It was a watershed moment that said this coaching staff was DIFFERENT!!

Three seasons later Ags were 10-0 and ranked #2 in country.

The way Fisher and staff went toe to toe w Bama, Fl State, LSU, Texas, OU, Clemson and WON almost every target was incredible. That and the national breadth- stretching from California to Florida.

This is the start of an era like Texas A&M has never seen. I think 20-20 is realistically our first banner year under Fisher, but not selling short anything in between.

I'd add the 1982 class under Sherill was a close second to 1972. it just wasnt as striking in how diffetent it felt at the time.

Fisher has skins on the wall. Bellard didn't. A&M is also a very different place now than it was in 1972. It's a lot easier sell now. What we got yesterday was just the beginning imo.

I was thinking it feels more like '82. Ags coming off a string of mediocre, underperforming seasons, make a huge splash hire of a new HC (and watch the media lose their minds at the money we threw at said coach). Maybe a slow start (remember 'get your licks in now while you can'?) followed by a crazy run of success. Deja vu........

You are correct- which is why what Bellard did was so remarkable. He took a mediocre at best program and turned it around in three seasons and convinced black athletes that TAMU was not a racist university (which opposing coaches used against us on a regular basis, that we had degrees beyond poultry science, etc.

Fisher has so many more advantages now than Bellamy did- money, facilities, commitment from the administration, popularity of TAMU, etc.

Bellard's success was not expected- Fisher's is. In my opinion, what he did yesterday is why he has a 10 year $75M salary. So far, so good!

In 1972, Belard turned this program into a regional power that has been equal to tu sign head to head wins and losses and was overall looked upon as a good option.

Jackie too the program to the next level and RC maintained it.

What was the common denominator with all those teams? Great defense! Belard had Bunches of All-American type players on defense on those teams.

Fran almost destroyed this program. Sherman built it back up with some great players on offense and had some good players on defense, be but not enough depth. Sumlin took Sherman's players and lucked out with JFF for a couple years. He did not leave the program in a balanced shape. Way to many WR and DB on the roster compared to lack of depth at others.

Jimbo is correcting that and getting ready to take this program to levels that it has never seen. We are going to put Saban out to pasture!

im not sure football or this country will survive that long, but 40 yrs from now you Fish will be telling "New Army" about what it was like when Manziel came on the scene- and they'll all be rolling their eyes in some sort of hologrammic way of course!

Don't knock poultry science. It was good enough for Von.

Yes, it was too bad. Was anybody besides me at that God awful game at the Astrodome when all the cougar high
fans were yelling "33 zip 33 zip". The wheels came off that night, I remember seeing the BMA's heading for the bar and I knew something was up. Bellard was gone a few days later.

As for some of the other comments on this thread. You young guys wouldn't believe some of the questions Coach Bellard had to field from Old Ags, and I'm talking about classes from the 20's and 30's, about the type of players he was recruiting.
The person that is not willing to fight and die, if need be, for his country has no right to life.
