I heard they keep trying to retire the A-10, but its popularity for flyovers has kept it alive all these years. Is that right?

Thought it was because short of blowing off a wing those planes are dang near indestructible.

His shirt is inside-out so the tag is right where it should be.

Also the A-10 loader toads always liked to remind us that the plane could not fly without the gun installed....which is pretty cool.

Its popularity is because it is a particularly bad ass weapon to have in our arsenal. Those things are awesome.

They keep trying to retire them and the services keep telling them no.

There simply is not another plane in our arsenal that can do what the Warthog does... Period!

Second to none in close air support for ground troups, to say it is overpowered is an understatement, carries a TON of ordnance, as someone said above it is damn near indestructible, and can fly home almost in pieces... just as long as that BIG ASS gun is still attached!!! Haha

Seriously, it is one of the most impressive pieces of machinery in the moden era of warfare and it's 50 years old, has served in every major conflict and just got re-deployed last year to Incirlik Air Base Turkey to fight ISIS!

And I'm sure it helps that the enemy knows them as the Crosses of Death!!!

From what my grandpa told me as a lifer in the Air Force... served in Vietnam, Korea, and stationed in Okinawa for 6 years... there is not a more feared plane out there... The Warthog is hands down THE most terrifying or glorious sound to hear on the battlefield depending on which side your on!!!

That fast bird, with that big gun, and the best pilots in the world flying it... aimed at you... Scary as hell.

In the early early 80's, there was an A-10 that buzzed the Quad several times at low altitude during evening formation.

We just assumed it was an Aggie pilot.....good times. Anyone else recall that event?
