It's a damn crapshoot regardless, so how about trying something different this time around and go with a defense guy, after 15 years with 3 different offensive minded coaches. The best & most consistent A&M teams I remember, and I'm not a youngster, were built on defense. Kyle's once stellar reputation as an intimidating place to play was built on defense. The SEC is built on defense.

There is more offensive talent in the state of Texas than defensive talent. That didn't used to be the case but it is now. Therefore, it would seem to me that if you had a choice between which side of the ball you wanted the most emphasis and the best coaching, it would be on the defense, because it's the most difficult to recruit. The other area of emphasis, and what is critical for A&M to reach the top of the SEC, is an elite, dual threat quarterback. Once you have the defense and the quarterback, the rest will fall into place, and rather easily, in my humble opinion.

I want to pull my hair out when I hear the likes of Leach and Gundy thrown around as possible candidates. That business model at A&M has failed for most of the last 15 years. I think when you are rebuilding, and if you change coaches you are rebuilding, you need to choose which side of the ball is going to be the priority. I vote defense. "Build the defense first and they will come."

Did you watch your last Texas HS football game in 1999?

I've watched Texas HS football for quite a few years, and well since 1999. My point is that the defensive talent in the State is not what it once was, so that's where I think the priority needs to be for a head coach, especially in this league. You may have a different opinion. Maybe I'm wrong. That's fine.

You're exactly right, the defensive talent in this state is not what it once was, and that's why we're going to have a really difficult time building a defensive stalwart at A&M with a defensive head coach. Hell we hired a guy as our DC who for years could snap his fingers and field a top 5 defense and he can't crack the top 40 in the country here. The HS game here is not conducive to defense.

I'd be focused on finding a young coach who can recruit and instill an identity of toughness and physicality within the program (can you run the ball and stop the run on 3rd and 3 or less....) personally I'd take Scott Frost or PJ Fleck right now.

WSU looked like his Raider teams of old last night, sans the defense. Looks like Leach is finally getting the type of athletes he's been wanting up there.

Side note: why is every USC quarterback automatically on the "Heiseman watch"?

To say that Texas no longer has the defensive "talent" doesn't make sense to me. The talent hasn't changed, just what they're taught and how they're trained has.

Many are remembering defense from the 80's where good defenses routinely held teams under 200 ypg. Those days are gone. The proliferation of the spread offenses has changed that forever.

I sure as heck don't want a coach that allows 164 yards and no TDs to a Heisman trophy contender.

Gimme one of those coaches who turns the opponent's 3rd string QB into a Heisman contender after we allow him to get 400 yards and 5 TDs. Gimme!

Unless you are willing to pay him the entire contact up front, Leach isn't coming to Texas

No, but a Heisman runner up did. Josh Heupel in 2000 at Oklahoma. OU won national championship that year running the Air Raid. 2000 season was the year after Leach installed it and then left for TTU. Heupel was AP Player of the Year that year. Although Leach had left, they kept running the pure Air Raid with the QB Leach picked and trained.

Unfortunately, I think you are correct. The law is the law, but tech (Hance, actually) really did screw Leach over.

In one respect, Hance was old school. He truly disliked Leach for not loving tech as much as he (Hance) did. When coaching carousels happened, Leach's name would surface and his agent would negotiate a raise and extension. Hance saw that as disloyal and deeply resented it.

(Disclaimer: I knew Hance back in the day. Guy was a POS then, so I assume he still is.)

Yeah. Tech should have quietly settled with Leach, instead of publicly trashing him like Hance did. The Hubs and I were in Arkansas visiting family and getting ready to go to a bowl game in Memphis when the Leach firing was going down. The local radio shows were all about the Leach mess and Hance giving radio interviews. His hatred for Leach was evident.

(Apropos of nothing, LSU settled with Chavis, very quietly. So someone checked Alleva's ego.)

I shudder to think what Leach would have done if he was HC over 2012 A&M. He might have hung a hundred on someone. I'm not kidding either.
