The first one that I built as a kid was a 386 SX-25Mhz. At the time it was a beast compared to the 286 that the rest of the family was using.

Atari 400. I learned Basic programming on it. The games looked just like their arcade versions which was a huge step up from the Atari 2600 game console.

Sinclair (9900 I think); came in kit form- i.e. a bag-o-parts. had to get a technician buddy of mine to heat up the ole soldering iron and solder every resistor, capacitor, circuit protector, connector, cpu, memory device, etc. It hook up to the tv.

Apple ][ (which I still have stored away), TRS-80, Compaq portable computer and Leading Edge pc clone.

Compaq:

That thing weighed a ton. Not sure how it classified as portable other than it had a handle and was carted around like luggage.

Some meaningless trivia...

I called on Gateway Technology (not to be confused with Gateway Computers who Compaq had a deal to buy but Ted Waits decided to cancel it) that became Compaq and now HP. There were ~24 people with the company at that time.

I had the display, the keyboard, SRAM, connectors, all of the electrolytic caps, all of the heat sinks, a ton of the power devices used in the power supply, etc.

I still call on them and have sold over $3B of products to them over the last 30+ years. What a ride!!! There is a great movie about Compaq called 'Silicon Cowboys" that talks about their rise and fall.

I think it was called Sinclair Timex; I bought it based on an ad in the Wall Street Journal.

I sold Zilog for a while for the chips and boards.
