LOL. I was at A&M during the Tony Franklin era. Met him at a bar one night. He actually put his bare foot up on our table and said, "Want to see my foot?"

(Disclaimer: It was the night he held the record for a bit.)

Was there for the Baylor game when Tony kicked a 64 yarder in the first half. Turn to my son and friend and said remember this it won't happen again soon. Then he kicked a 65 yarder in the second half. Which lead Coach Teaff who was on the rules committee to push to change the rule that a miss would go back to the spot of the kick and kickoffs would happen from the 35 due to the success of the 12th msn kickoff team. Gaylor.

I was at the Baylor game, too. As strong as the wind was blowing from the south, I was hoping for a five-yard penalty before the kick so he could have made it from 70 yards.

And the Aggies are still producing top-notch kickers to this day. Lot of good it did Teaff.

That era used a tee as well on all kicks. I wonder how long FGs today would be if they still used one?

These two things happened about 8 years apart.

My recollection is that the wind was blowing from the north but then I am old!

Teaff was good at using his place on rules committee to change rules to his advantage. Arkansas, tu, and A&M all had excellent kickers and he didn't. Changed this rule and one on kickoffs so that the ball had to land in the endzone or you would get penalized if it went beyond the end line. He was a pretty good coach, but because of these things, I never liked him.

The reason I recall the wind was blowing from the south is because there wasn't anything except the nets on the tennis courts to slow it down. But, that was a lot of beers and years ago.

I know Grant Teaff is supposed to be this great fatherly figure, but he always struck me as a sore loser who hid behind false piety.

I have been at the rules meeting twice and I will assure you one person cannot get a rule changed. That's not how the process works.

Dick Vermiel told Franklin to squib it once, and Tony tried to kick it deep. He failed, and it got returned, maybe for a TD. Must have been fun to coach that meathead.

I was sitting in the south end zone bleacher seats for this one. My freshman year. What wind there was, was from the north. It was a cool, overcast day.

I was at this game as well and IIRC some kid from SWT??? kicked a 69 yarder later that same day. Franklins records were short lived.

Actually, it was this kid at Abilene Christian.

*69 yards Ove Johansson, Abilene Christian (W 17-0) v East Texas St., 10/16/1976

(2" tee) Shotwell Stadium, Abilene. NAIA

Nope I was on a date with my boyfriend at the time. (However, my boyfriend did kind of disappear when George Woodard asked me to dance one time at The Sports Club. I told him I was on a date and George asked, "Is he bigger than me?" I replied, "Is anybody?" But I could see my boyfriend (who had been at the bar getting drinks) make an abrupt u-turn and walk away with my drink, I might add.)

Guess he thought he could take on Tony Franklin, but he wanted no part of Woodard. LOL.

Watch the video replay - wind was from the north. His 1st FG a mere 64 yds barely cleared the uprights in the 1st qtr. The 2nd one the 65 yarder easily cleared the post and would have been good from 70 yds

If it makes you feel any better, I was correct about it coming out of the north but I still feel really old!

The reason I remember it being out of the north was that my girlfriend (now wife) and I had end zone seats and on one of the field goal attempts Tony kicked the ball and it looked like it was going to be wide right by 20 yards! It kept drifting and drifting. Of course it was kicked toward the other end of the field and no way could we tell if it was going to be good or not so I watched the official to see if he raised his arms.
