I have three examples of related instances.

1. My mother got her BS at Our Lady Of The Lake in San Antonio. She was a PE major but the professors convinced her to become a doctor. She got her Ph.D. At UTMB Galveston. She only wore Aggie sweatshirts or other Aggie clothing and only rooted for tamu wither her two brothers who did attend tamu. She even sang the Aggie songs.

2. Red mccombs played football at southwestern then went to the military two years. Then he came back and attended UT. Business school and UT law school never graduating. He is known way more for supporting UT but in fairness has also supported southwestern a lot too.

3. Practically anyone from Oklahoma roots for OU with few exceptions. This includes many from other universities like Tulsa. I don't know how true this is within Oklahoma but this is overwhelming with the Okies that live in Texas.

I went to vocational school in Austin after receiving my college education at A&M. I still bleed maroon, and did so during my three years of law school. We even had an Aggie Law Student society, and wore A&M shirts to class during the week leading up to the Thanksgiving game.

tu has a great law school - the only law school in Texas ranked in the top 15. Back in 92 when I started law school, A&M didn't have a law school. While they recently bought one, the career opportunities for A&M School of Law grads pale in comparison to those in the top 25% at tu. Loving your alma mater is one thing, but giving up $100,000+ in starting salary by going to a lower-ranked law school because of a football rivalry makes no sense.

What's your school? I say law school doesn't count and that you are an Aggie. I've got friends that went to schools that aren't good in football, but went to law schools with decent college teams. It seems they disregard the bad athletic program in favor of the good program. Thoughts?

Dated a chick once that did her undergraduate at A&M and Pharmacy degree at UT Austin. She always considered herself an Aggie as did I. She only went to UT for Pharmacy because A&M didn't have one.

Pretty common among pharmacists.

I know a guy who did his undergrad at tOSU and much later did the executive MBA program at A&M. Got his Aggie ring and goes to football games. Seems much more aligned as a Texas Aggie than a Buckeye.

Classic STX, thinks everything is about him even when it isn't.

In all seriousness, I would be interested to see how any of my friends that went to Texas would react with all the **** I've talked in the past 6+ years.

It's like the Laws of Robotics

  • 1. An alum may not root against their undergrad school.

  • 2. An alum may not root against their graduate school except when this would conflict with the First Law.

  • 3. An alum may root for any other team they want so long as such rooting does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.

On the Second Law, so long as your grad school and undergrad school are not playing against each other, it's pretty much up to your judgment whether rooting for the grad school counts as violating the First Law. Rivalries are the obvious situation where that might apply.

This.

I have mine from TCU and most of the time it's fine and doesn't conflict and get to enjoy watching them kick the Lil 10's ass.

But baseball makes it painful.

Texas A&M is my school. Luckily there were enough other Ags at UTLaw that i had some folks to hang out with.

My experience was about 1/4 of the UT law students were Ags and all Ags remained Ags. The other 3/4 were either already sips or became sip fans (i.e. Baylor grads wearing UT national championship t shirts, etc).

But i was there in 2005 when sips had a good team so it was easy for all non Ags to hope on the bandwagon.

My doctorate from A&M doesn't need one.

I'm lucky that A&M is top 3 in my field. My Bachelors and PhD are both from A&M so I never have to worry about this.

I can't believe how many AGGIES here received their Masters at UT. I mean, doesn't that do against everything you believe in? And I'm not trolling or being sarcastic. It just seems as much as you hate UT (or TU), that you'd never, ever claim anything from that school much less spend gobs of money there. And then talk trash about it night and day!
I hate t.u. with a passion, but I was raised in Austin from a very young age. Only lived in CS as long as it took me to get my degree from A&M. Having said that, I love Austin, and I'm married to another Aggie here. Just finished some certification programs for personal training and plan to attend t.u. for my Master's in Sport Psychology. It has everything to do with convenience, program availability, and not wanting to uproot from my husband. Will still forever hate t.u. and always have. And will forever talk trash.

"Loyalty", "hate" etc are reserved for athletic programs, right?

Surely people don't confuse academics (i.e. the true purpose these places exist) with their athletic entertainment efforts?

My Dad went to undergrad at U Toledo and grad school at A&M. He bleeds maroon because Toledo is obviously a very small athletic department and he had just never experienced anything like A&M before he got there (in '87). He still loves Toledo, but he supports the Aggies first and foremost and the two are not likely to ever play each other anyway.

I went to undergrad at A&M and grad school at U Tennessee, so my situation was different from my dad's. I bled maroon long before grad school, which was basically just a job for me. I love Knoxville and have a soft spot for Tennessee as a result my experiences there, but their athletic performance isn't important to me.

I suspect many Ags (or former students of other schools with big athletic departments) have a story similar to mine. Generally, I think if your undergrad has a big athletic department, you're not all that likely to care too much about the athletics of your grad school. If you're an Aggie going to Texas, you're not all that likely to not hope they lose every game in embarrassing fashion.
