The defender who caught the ball on the interception was Jim Willenborg who swears the referee ran over to him after the catch and said "You're out of bounds; its our ball".

Was 13 at my Grandpa's watching back and white TV with family. Saw the play and almost got punished for what i said. He was in. I was full-blooded AGGIE for sure after that.

Thank God you managed those 7 edits to provide us with a photo that is too early in the play to reach a firm conclusion.

rvhorn- Welcome to Aggieland.
I am curious. Do you also go to the Iowa State, Oklahoma State, and Kansas States forums and defend questionable longhorn wins based on unbiased referee calls. You know the calls that basically changes a game in the longhorn favor? I am sure it is all just a coincidence that it has consistently happened so many times.

I grew up with the official's kids... Mr. Covin was a great guy... No hose job... Willenborg was juggling the ball as he went down... I cried after that loss, thinking we were cheated... But after GROWING UP, and looking at the play, it was the correct call

I've got visual evidence in front of me right now that says you're wrong. Hands were CLAMPED around the ball as he went out.
Goodness, there are people still this upset about a call in a game 50+ years ago?

Oh yeah, I have visual evidence Dez caught this ball too.......

Fast forward a little bit and watch the ball hit the ground.

He wasn't out of bound yet. By the time he did go out of bounds both his hands were wrapped around the ball.

Officiating 101.....If you have question to the outcome of a play and no help is available DO NOT TAKE AWAY THE PLAY THE PLAYER MADE. In other words, the Aggie db made the play and you must have clear evidence to take the play away from him.

And let this event remind all of you who pine to play these people again that they cheat. Sips detest the level playing field and do all they can to avoid it. If we ever play them again, rest assured they will not have changed.

What does it say about your psyche that you have to come to this website in order to validate yourself?

Against texas maybe.... But what about your school? Is it Texas State or UTSA?

Obviously not as mad as you, otherwise we would be talking about this on the Shag.

I was 14 and was at the game with my father, '44. I am 67 and still devastated by that loss.

To the sip above: A&M did not soak the field. It had been raining off and on for several days.

A&M had a chance to win on the same drive, the one the sips finally scored on, when we intercepted a pass with about three minutes left and promptly fumbled it back to the sips.

As far as the interception above, I have watched the only available film many times, and it is not clear if the Aggie has possession before he goes out of bounds. He was juggling it quite a bit. It was a judgment call that long years of bias and tradition played a part in.

Video

The Aggie who intercepted the pass was John Brotherton. He tried to lateral the ball and it fell on the ground. The TU player who recovered it was Thomas Stockton from Bryan High School. We definitely win if Stockton does not recover. I was at the game sitting on the 50 home side. The call in the end zone I believe was made by an official named Larry Colvin. From my angle it looked like Willenborg clearly caught the ball then slid on both his knees across the end line. It was a catch. The most tragic loss in my entire career of watching games at Kyle since 1954. Would still be today the greatest home upset ever by the Ags over that entire period of time.

I was 15 and sitting with my Dad '53 in the 4th row of the horseshoe. No one had a better look at they play. Though he bobbled it, he had full control before he hit the back line. Bad enough we lost, tu win the NC. That wouldn't have happened if tu grad Rooster Andrews makes the right call. Not in the shadow of the tower any more.

In the LHN documentary, you can see the player bobbling the ball as he goes out of bounds. Look at the picture posted above; it looks like the ball is not going to be an easy catch.

Also, y'all soaked the field before the game to stop the Texas ground game.

The Aggies played over their heads and could have put the game away if they hadn't fumbled, if I recall correctly.

I know you're not convinced because complaining about this game is now a tradition.
Correct. A late Aggie fumble gave the ball back to Texas. Actually, another fourth-quarter fumble led to Texas' first touchdown. Without either of those fumbles, we win easily.

I wish RV***** and every other sip would just go ahead and detail all of those games that they lost over the years in the SWC and B12 due to flagrant missed calls and refs errors. I can't think of any but I'll wait .

An interesting side story here.....1963 was Hank Foldberg's 2nd year as TAMU head coach.....he had spent 60 and 61 as head coach at Whicita State and was highly successful. The last game he coached at Whicita was the 61 Sun Bowl in El Paso. They were upset 17-9 by my dad's alma mater Villanova.

My dad grew up in Penna......he was a Mechanical Engineer by trade...and as a result...made a lot of friends who were Aggies...he attended numerous industrial conferences at TAMU....and fell in love with the place...the Corps...the Aggie Band ect...

Foldberg really rubbed my dad the wrong way after that Sun Bowl. Foldberg bad mouthed his own players....and seemed not to want to give Villanova any credit at all for pulling off an upset. ( you gotta remember..in 1961 there were hardly any Bowl Games like there are now.....getting invited to a Bowl Game in 1961 was still a pretty good accomplishment.)

Anyway my dad...Villanova grad and huge Aggie fan was thinking " Good God.....A&M sure got a pig in a poke with this guy"

Foldberg went 6-23-1 in his 3 years at TAMU.

Years later I was having a conversation with one of Foldberg's players at Whicita State.....the name came up when I told him I was an Aggie.

The guy was from North Jersey who went out to Whicita and played Linebacker for Hank...

The guy went on to a pretty good coaching career himself....you probably heard of him

Guy by the name of Bill Parcells.....
