Myles Garrett at DT?

I recall at random times last year Myles was lined up inside where he seemed to get a good push. I was wondering people's thoughts of seeing more of this on 1st and 2nd down because he constantly wants to run up field which hurt us on run defense.

I fully understand that he had the ability to learn when to stay home on run plays but he has to be willing to do that. I do not believe is playing him at DT in early down situations will be a negative to his draft status and us winning should take priority over trying to get him drafted higher.

What are y'all's thoughts on seeing Myles play a little more inside on early downs?

I'm not sure Chavis values my opinion on the subject.

Want me to call him and ask if he wants yours ?

Or should I just send him a link to this thread ?

Please advise.

With his speed I would but him at LB before DT.

Are we trying to make it easier to double team our star pass rusher?

He is more prone to injury on the inside than the outside. Not gonna happen.

He also would make an excellent quarterback if someone would teach him how to throw.

How about we train him to not get upfield so much (which he improved on in the spring game), and train our DL to get a better push up front.

Why does the zoo come up with these hair brained overly complex ideas to solve problems that actually have simple solutions?

I bet he would be an awesome TE too... we should stop practicing/developing him at DE and have him spend all his time playing out of position.

Was expecting a little more intelligent conversation than the responses so far. He DID play DT at parts during the year for certain reasons and did very well getting a push so I guess the question would be would you like to see more of it.

And he is getting double teamed and held already. My point was against power running teams where he hasn'tbeen very effective do you think moving him inside would be more beneficial.

I thought some of the responses were fairly quick-witted.

I assume that everytime he was inside, it was on a definite passing situation.

MG does not have the strength to hold up inside. The interior linemen are nastier than the tackles he's used to and they will drive block him twenty yards every play. His finesse style works on the outside where there's room for him to get around the tackle.

If it's 3rd and 20 and the offensive line takes Texas Tech like splits (large gaps from one lineman to the next), then he might move inside to force the team to stop using the wide splits and then he'll return to the outside with a shorter distance to run now that the linemen have had to go back to a normal set up.

Imagine a top 35 run defense, a top 10 total defense, and scoring defense at exactly 14 points per game. All very achievable especially if we end up with a hybrid pass/run game that works to equalize TOP and our offense can move back up towards top 5.

I think Myles is better at drawing attention and pressuring on pass downs that stuffing the middle. So DE in a 4-3 seems his natural position. Weak side OLB in a 3-4 in the NFL due to size/speed.

I cannot remember if they were for sure passing downs but I recall him stuffing the run a couple times when he was moved inside because he exploded off the ball and used his long arms for serparation. He is no doubt an end in the NFL and will be a great one. I think in college you have more flexibility to move players around to their strengths.

I am not implying using him there all the time but using him there more often so it's harder to keep tabs on him.

I think every time Myles was lined up inside, the DL was running some specific stunts.

Move him around like JJ Watt -

he's a top five pick next year.
screwing with his position is a good idea because he sucks at the current one.

jj watt lines up inside all the time. Creates confusion.

I now know how little football knowledge many people on this board have... As the last couple people have stated JJ Watt lines up inside sometimes as well. Moving him inside every once in a while will not "screw with his position." You move your best player around every once in a while for confusion purposes and stunts. We have had very solid DE play but DT has been lacking and I expect an improvement. Anyone who thinks Myles who is like 270 LBS of muscle will get driven back into our linebackers is smoking crack.

I trusted last year he would eventually keep him from rushing up the field to the point it hurt us on rushing plays, but I got disappointed.

Not sure if serious. They already line him up inside from time to time. Isn't that enough?

I think he might make a good power forward. Might be a little short but not for college.

Playing a lineman inside is a factor of his technique count and versatility. Size plays a factor, too. The greats like Reggie White could line up all over the place - as Watt can - but it's not something you do overnight.

If Chavis wants to develop him in that direction, great. If he doesn't, great. The interior of the line is not hurting so badly that it needs Myles inside. He'll learn how to stay home on run plays.

Putting him inside was a rare twist we threw at teams to catch them off guard. This works once maybe twice a game and Chief ran it to perfection last year.

It's 2016 people. Why do we have to use labels like DT and LB and TE? Can't we all just let players self-identify?
