First he took his son very late in the recruiting season to visit the Horns. I believe he did this late on purpose. After Stidham had committed to Baylor. Trying to work a deal I assume to be set up as some sort of QB consultant and using Stidham being gone as leverage against A&M. At least that is my opinion. Now Allen leaves and Kevin goes to Sumlin with the transfer talk. I like the kid. But as a coach I know, a Dad like Kevin Murray will not change. This will keep going on as long as his Son is here. The question is, is Kyler worth it as a player? Media will have a field day with this. But in the long run keeping Kevin around may be worse for the program. Again, just my opinion.
Agreed that the Murrays had some leverage and used it to ( in my humble opinion ) extract some promises from Sumlin. I don't have any inside knowledge but if you look at what has happened over the past year, that's the only thing that makes sense
Remember, in February a pro baseball career was still a possibility ( yes I remember that he skipped baseball last spring )
Next item - it's clear to everyone now that Kyler should have red-shirted. Many said so this summer, and many said so last February. He wasn't physically or mentally ready for the SEC.
I said all that to make this point --- I hope this coaching staff, and specifically Coach Sumlin learns the lessons from all this. Specifically, no one player is more valuable than the team, the recruiting class that year, or the program as a whole. As we saw with the Malik situation, it's difficult to watch a highly thought of prospect get away, but in the long run it's best to stick to principle.
