If two receivers run to the same spot on the field, are they twice as likely to catch the ball? hmm makes you think!

LOL at all the people saying no run game and O-line issues.

Carson averaged almost 6 yards per carry against Vandy and we still could not score in the red zone even though we had many trips there. Let that sink in for a minute.

#1 reason we can't score in the redzone is SPAV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what was his average on short yardage plays?

Wouldn't surprise me if it was negative. I've never seen so many short yardage plays in one game where a linebacker was consistently 2 yards in the backfield by the time the QB had handed off the ball.

The WR coach, Moorhead??, seems to be largely flying under radar yet a number of the WR corps regularly drops passes, bunches up near each other in passing zones and runs tacky routes according to posters who have watched this closely. Despite a lot of talent, this doesn't appear to be well coached.

Sure, Tra got stuffed for a loss a few times. But I think we were in the red zone 6 times and Tra had a total of 5 carries in the red zone even though he was averaging almost 6 yards per carry. (Look up the stats to confirm my numbers as I looked on ESPN).

5 carries in the red zone on 6 trips is not enough.

By the way, I forgot to mention. One reason we get stuffed for so many losses behind the line of scrimmage is not all because of Tra or the O-line. It is because we line-up in the damn shotgun every time.

Short yardage we need to line up under center!

It doesn't matter how you line up if they can penetrate immediately.

Inability to run the ball, coupled with zero I-formation and Spav......
what, we need 3 inches for the first down? let's put the running back 8 yards back and run a slow developing play that assures at least 2 defensive players get in the backfield because going under center is too complicated.
Not only that, there is about a 95% chance that it is going to be a slow developing play to Carson on the left side of the line, so you are pretty good at jumping that play.

Which every single team we play does on every single 3rd and short situation, and we have about a 95% failure rate.

The Vandy defense was unusually good in the Red Zone, IMO.

It does matter how you line up. When you don't have to cover the center and worry about a QB sneak you can just shoot gaps.

Sure it does. It would be a 2 yard loss instead of a 5 yard loss. Or may not mean anything with a QB sneak.

Shotgun is totally insane when we need 1 freakin foot.

I don't remember seeing Houston have problems with it.

Sneak or at least have the back moving when he gets the ball.

Hard to believe we do not have the QB sneak in our playbook.

I've seen teams run it successfully with pretty bad O-lines. So I don't buy the argument that our O-line or center is too bad to run that play.

Of course not, spav's not "coaching" for them, he's "coaching" for us.

God help us...

Put the QB sneak back in the Aggie playbook for heavens sake. How did it ever get overlooked ???

Because you have to either run it or pass it into the end zone.

Spav only runs the plays that Sumlin wants him to run or things would have have gotten better.

An OL that was not recruited for power run blocking + poorly designed schemes for the situation

I expect it will be significantly better next yr. It will be emphasized by the new OC in the Spring.

Does anyone else think Spav is secretly playing touchdown bingo with the plays on his index card? It's like once we score with a play he checks it off and we never see it again, and since about 1/3 of the way through the season he keeps running the same handful of plays over and over because those are the only ones left that he needs to make bingo or something.

It might be easier for our OLine to block if we lined up in a power run formation and forced the defense to align accordingly. When they put 5-6 defenders on the line vs. our 5 linemen and a tight end, isn't it easier to know who to block? but instead we've turned our 230 lb rb into the biggest east/west finesse running back ever.

SPAVITAL! Beyond a shadow of a doubt. Crappy plays combined with even crappier red zone play calling is a recipe for disaster. How many times a game do we need to see Carson take the ball on a sweep and run down the line of scrimmage trying to gain 1 stinking yard. How many times, dumbassital?

And why in the hell can't the QB line up under center with a two back set? A fullback and a tailback? Is that too hard for our mental midget offensive coordinator to come up with?

I would be interested to see how many times we have been in the red zone this year versus the number of td's we have scored.

This is nothing new for spread teams. With today's NCAA practice time limits, you can't simply convert to a power running team inside the red zone. The answer is that we need to score more TD's from OUTSIDE the red zone, or at least outside the 15, after which the safeties can more easily play the run and the pass. We don't attack the end zone from the entire field like Baylor's version of the spread. Baylor actually uses it's speed at receiver to beat defenders downfield on a regular basis. We seem to be afraid to try that and are addicted to throwing behind the LOS or short/mid range crossing patterns and sideline routes, and hoping our receivers will beat their defender after the catch. That might be the staple of our offense but I think we have the talent to go over the top more often. I don't have the numbers but I would guess our TD's longer than 20 yards are way down this year.
