IIRC the commentators were anticipating a fake the whole game. I doubt Saban had overlooked the likelihood of that happening. I didn't rewatch the whole game to see if this was occurring at other times. I'm sure there are some Arky fans that would have sniffed it out by now if it were there.

Even if it was a cleverly coded sign, using a blatant hand waving above the head signal seems like amateur hour.

Seems our QB is making decisions at the line based on defense so if it really helps I guess they could just hold up the number of fingers that corresponds to one of the dozen plays on Spavs business card and go from there.

I see a lot of schools holding up large screens to block coaches from being seen while calling in plays. Suppose its better safe than sorry. Do we do this?

Not like the go pro has a live feed any way. Couldn't someone in the stands zoom in on a coach all game? Seems like that'd be much more effective that someone BEHIND the hand signals.

When I played in college, we used to change hand signals/vocal calls on an almost weekly basis. Nothing overly drastic, but different enough to where they couldn't be interpreted. There were were times that we also adjusted at halftime. For example, we "checked" into certain plays where the "hot word" would begin with "G". The word would then be whatever the quarterback felt as long as it began with that letter. That same play would have an alternate letter for the week that we could audible into if we felt like it. We even had a "reset" word and "false words" if we thought teams were reading us. You can do the same with hand signals or numbered plays. It's not hard to mix things up.
