The most shocking thing I learned from the show is that he played in the NBA for 13 years.

JJ Reddick comes to mind as another Duke player that was hated by every opposing fan base. In basketball, the successful white player is usually a magnet for ridicule by fans.

I think its a little confirmation bias. Everyone loved pistol pete. John stockton? People only hated larry because he was a persistent trash talker. But there are plenty of black basketball players everyone hated as well

I'm not gonna say every white basketball player has been hated. That would not be true. I can think of some white basketball players I haven't liked

As far as trash talkers.. there was an article just last week how Kevin Garnett is one of the biggest trash talkers in the NBA. He also has a large fan base that respects him or are big fans of his.

Don't kid yourself BBA. racism goes both ways and for sure in sports. Allow me to bring Tiger Woods into the converstation. Thousands upon thousands of people magically started loving golf when Tiger came onto the scene and was dominating. I didn't know one black guy that liked golf or watched it until Tiger started. Now that Tiger is a flaming piece of garbage on the greens I don't hear any black guys talking golf anymore. Tiger was all the talk years ago. Roy McIlroy is 25 years old and has already won 9 PGAs, show me one black guy on the Rory bandwagon. He says all the right things. He's young and passionate about is sport.

Im on the rory bandwagon...

Why does it matter if blacks jump on his bandwagon? I dont see blacks coming out saying they hate him. And im sure he has reached plenty of white kids that didn't like golf before. Which would be the same as tiger reaching black kids. But whats your point in bringing that up man?

What does the tiger woods thing have to do with hated white players? They were rooting for tiger not golf, which is to be expected when someone dominates and transcends the sport.

Just like how white guys love seeing the token white guy on the court ballin and breakin fools ankles, black guys like seeing a black dude play and dominate on courses they could never play on. You ever wonder why golf is a white dominated sport? Because its expensive and exclusive. Even of a black kid wanted to play, where would he play? They dont put courses in the ghetto. And country clubs are notorious for excluding blacks, except to keep the grass green. whites made sure that sport wasnt for us, and plenty had a huge problem with tiger playing on their courses and beating them. So naturally a black guy doing it served as vicarious victory against a prejudiced system. And there are plenty who hated tiger and there are plenty of blacks that enjoy golf before and after tiger. I know black people that were not tiger fans because they saw him as uncle tom for playing golf. It goes both ways.

Why does everything turn into a race issue these days its pretty sickening. we cant talk about this laettener guy without bringing up, "oh if he was black he would be loved and respected but hes white sooooo hurr durr". Quit with that B.S. Millions who didnt care about basketball started loving it because of michael jordan.

And are you sure about KG? because most people i talk to hate him for his on the court antics. Repsecting his contribution and skill set is one thing.

I think it's easier for predominantly white student section to focus their taunts at a white player on the other team. He really doesn't even have to be good. I guess my generalization above was really more thinking of college basketball. Even my time at A&M, I can recall white players on the other team (spare or good player) took the brunt of most pre-planned taunts.

I think BBA knows it goes both ways. He's one of the smarter cookies on here. He loves to debate and that's why I like battling with him. We typically agree on most things we just come to the point at different angles. Race is never a fun topic to talk about.

Tiger didn't get the following because he was black, he got the following because he was dominating. It was like watching Jordan in the 90's, nobody could touch him and everyone wanted to watch and see what kind of crazy shot he would make. Rory, while the best in the world right now, is no where near the level of Tiger in his prime. Any given tournament Rory will miss the cut due to the strength of the field. comparing Tiger to Rory is like comparing Jordan to LeBron.

This will be my last post on this topic. I've driven my point across to the point I'm probably annoying people and I apologize.

Tiger came on to the scene and was really good early on. He was very famous and had a huge following, well before he became a dominate golfer. The longer he dominated the more and more people got into watching him. I agree. But he had a large fan base before his dominance started. Ill end my post with this question.

If Rory goes on to win another 9 PGAs in the next ... lets say 6 years. What percentage of his fan base will be black?

Steve Nash: pretty boy who is loved. Jerry West. And even Dirk. Chris Mullen? Bill Laimbeer and Rick Berry were both hated because they were A holes. Sean Bradly - hated because he was a big dork, Manute Bol? Never hated but a bit of a anomaly. Larry Bird? Trash talker. Loved and respected NOT a PRETTY BOY. Reggie Theus, very handsome good player. Not hated. I don't see any racism unless folks are looking for it here.

Did you even read my post? I never said it only goes one way. I was just offering a viewpoint and proposing that maybe not everything is about race. kasey brought up that blacks only cared about golf because of tiger and theres no black fans of rory. I was challenging that that doesnt mean the black people are racists. I liken what happened with black fans of tiger to what happened with jamaican people hopping on usain bolts bandwagon. Jamaicans only care about track because were good at it. most of us dont watch hockey, but if there was a jamaican in it best beleive every jamaican would be a hockey fan. See bobsledding.

But we were talking about people hating laettner, not blacks specifically, i dont know why race has to be brought up at all.

I don't understand what issue you're taking with black people liking Tiger Woods. Like BBA said, golf is a game that most blacks never had access too nor even understood from a cultural and socioeconomic standpoint. And yes, it was definitely designed to keep them out... So why wouldn't black people enjoy seeing someone who looked like them not only playing and having success in that arena, but flat out dominating it at the highest level?

And the Tiger Woods phenomenon was hardly contained to the black community. Pretty much everyone loved him. After showing dominance at such a young age, paired with getting the Jordan treatment from Nike and marketing him to everyone... he became the coolest and biggest thing on the planet. Was part of that because he was black? Probably... but it was more because he was marketable. And the PGA ate it up and absolutely pushed it. They wanted black, inner-city kids playing golf. It increased their market exponentially.

Black people don't flock to Rory because he's a goofy looking white, Irish kid... Why would they? And sorry but no, that is not racist. But anyone who truly appreciates golf will acknowledge Rory's ability no matter their skin color or nationality.

I don't have any issue with a community enjoying the success of one of their own, especially when it's one that has previously never had any exposure to that world. And don't get me wrong, I'm not some liberal SJW... I have a problem with plenty of issues today when it comes to race relations and how whites are portrayed by the media... but their are plenty of other examples to question the hypocrisy of reverse racism, and race baiting that are far better than this.

And I still don't really know what this has to do with hating Christian Laettner.

I said race and the fact Christian performed at a high level in a predominantly black sport were key factors. Being a pretty boy was the nail in the coffin.

So you admit then that Tiger being black played a part in this then? I highlighted your own very words. I agree with most of what your saying. I wont down play Tigers race though as one of the big factors of him being as loved as he was.

I find irony in your statement in why black people wouldn't flock to Rory though.
