The most shocking thing I learned from the show is that he played in the NBA for 13 years.

JJ Reddick comes to mind as another Duke player that was hated by every opposing fan base. In basketball, the successful white player is usually a magnet for ridicule by fans.
I think its a little confirmation bias. Everyone loved pistol pete. John stockton? People only hated larry because he was a persistent trash talker. But there are plenty of black basketball players everyone hated as well

I'm not gonna say every white basketball player has been hated. That would not be true. I can think of some white basketball players I haven't liked
As far as trash talkers.. there was an article just last week how Kevin Garnett is one of the biggest trash talkers in the NBA. He also has a large fan base that respects him or are big fans of his.
Don't kid yourself BBA. racism goes both ways and for sure in sports. Allow me to bring Tiger Woods into the converstation. Thousands upon thousands of people magically started loving golf when Tiger came onto the scene and was dominating. I didn't know one black guy that liked golf or watched it until Tiger started. Now that Tiger is a flaming piece of garbage on the greens I don't hear any black guys talking golf anymore. Tiger was all the talk years ago. Roy McIlroy is 25 years old and has already won 9 PGAs, show me one black guy on the Rory bandwagon. He says all the right things. He's young and passionate about is sport.

Im on the rory bandwagon...
Why does it matter if blacks jump on his bandwagon? I dont see blacks coming out saying they hate him. And im sure he has reached plenty of white kids that didn't like golf before. Which would be the same as tiger reaching black kids. But whats your point in bringing that up man?
What does the tiger woods thing have to do with hated white players? They were rooting for tiger not golf, which is to be expected when someone dominates and transcends the sport.

What does Tiger have to do with this? Race... Race has a lot to do with when it comes to some of the Christian Laettner hate. Race has a lot to do with the Tiger Woods love

quote:Tiger didn't get the following because he was black, he got the following because he was dominating. It was like watching Jordan in the 90's, nobody could touch him and everyone wanted to watch and see what kind of crazy shot he would make. Rory, while the best in the world right now, is no where near the level of Tiger in his prime. Any given tournament Rory will miss the cut due to the strength of the field. comparing Tiger to Rory is like comparing Jordan to LeBron.quote:quote:

I think it's easier for predominantly white student section to focus their taunts at a white player on the other team. He really doesn't even have to be good. I guess my generalization above was really more thinking of college basketball. Even my time at A&M, I can recall white players on the other team (spare or good player) took the brunt of most pre-planned taunts.

You ***gots are still arguing about this stupid ESPN documentary? Get a life....

Heres a pretty boy that's loved. He also played for Duke and was a teammate of Christian Laettner. Btw... no one hated Grant HIll (to include me)

I don't really understand your point... You think it's racist that black people liked Tiger Woods?

Jalen Rose said he hated him bc he was an "Uncle Tom"
so there's that

Goes along with point a few posts above

Larry Bird? Trash talker. Loved and respected NOT a PRETTY BOY.

quote:I said race and the fact Christian performed at a high level in a predominantly black sport were key factors. Being a pretty boy was the nail in the coffin.quote:quote:
Was part of that because he was black? Probably...
Black people don't flock to Rory because he's a goofy looking white, Irish kid... Why would they? And sorry but no, that is not racist. But anyone who truly appreciates golf will acknowledge Rory's ability no matter their skin color or nationality.
And I still don't really know what this has to do with hating Christian Laettner.
