Watch it. The script will be almost the exact same when they do a 30 for 30 on Johnny Manziel.

The truth of the matter is that Christian Laettner was a pretty boy athlete. Name me one pretty boy athlete that's white and not hated. Jeff Gordon... Tom Brady

Doesn't help that Christian Laettner won back to back championships, set records, had an iconic shot and is considered one of the greatest college basketball players of all time... As a white guy in a predominately black sport to top it off

If he had done everything he did while playing college basketball. But had done it for Georgetown and had grown up in the Bronx he would be loved

JFF's story is hopefully not done. But there were so many descriptions about Laettner that have already been said about Johnny, verbatim. Barring years in college and championships earned, it seemed eerily similar.

Peyton Manning and Brett Favre come to mind.

Peyton Manning is a pretty boy?

Brett Farve is from Mississippi and played most of his career in Green Bay. With that said, it was easy to like him. He didn't become a threat to win a Super bowl until way after the fact which was icing on the cake

None of the ones y'all mentioned dominated in college quiet like Christian Laettner did. His shot against UCONN puts his college career a notch above those others too while addng everything else he did

Neither did Jeff Gordon or Tom Brady.

Black pretty boy athletes are pretty well hated too

My favorite part about this thread is Kasey determining who is a pretty boy and who isn't.

Pretty hilarious race angle to try to manufacture here too. Well played.

I hate Vader, too!

There is no analogy between Laettner and JFF. Laettner was all about winning championships. He played in 4 Final Fours, won 2 of them. JFF has a nice trophy on the mantle but no championships. Both Laettner and JFF were white punks in black dominated sports. It's just that Laettner was a better punk.

JJ Reddick comes to mind as another Duke player that was hated by every opposing fan base. In basketball, the successful white player is usually a magnet for ridicule by fans.

Well, to be fair, he did hit a buzzer beater against UCONN in the tournament as well.

He was a dirty player. You guys may not have fully gotten that from a ESPN special. He was a very dirty cheap shot artist with a lot of talent. He was not hated because he was a "pretty boy"

Agree. Most of the doc was about how America hates Duke and Christian Laettner is the poster boy/reason for it. I know you guys love to think that the media and everyone hates us but we are largely irrelevant or at best an afterthought. The levels of success Laettner and Duke achieved are sadly not even visible from Aggieland.

Johnny will also never be a member of the greatest team ever assembled, the 1992 Dream Team.

He was an *******, even to his own teammates. That's why he was, and probably still is, hated.

Yeah because only women and homosexuals could only know what a pretty boy looks like...

I couldn't tell you how many times I've asked a Gordon or Brady hater why they hated those two and "pretty boy" was used when explaining why they hated the guy (s)

Btw... I've never heard a female say she hated Tom Brady

I've seen dirtier plays in just this season alone. None of the guys will ever be mentioned again after they leave college. Prime example... the guy from t.u that threw the elbow and was ejected.

This guy is an after thought and it's by far dirtier than what Christian did. Christian's "stomp" is the most overly exaggerated dirty play. The guy he hit with his foot got up and smiled

that was an epic time period for college basketball (late 80's/early 90's):

the Duke teams with Laettner and Grant Hill
UNLV with Larry Johnson and company
the Fab Five at Michigan
and a couple of great Arkansas teams as well

college basketball was much better when players stuck around for 3 or 4 years

If he had been white and ugly or black, he would have been considered a "hardnosed player" or he "played with an attitude" or he "played street ball".

The haters they showed appear to have created the term butt hurt. They were pretty pathetic. I loved the guy that dressed as kid as MalcolmX.

I think its a little confirmation bias. Everyone loved pistol pete. John stockton? People only hated larry because he was a persistent trash talker. But there are plenty of black basketball players everyone hated as well

I hated Tyler Hansbrough the same way I hated Christian Laettner, not because they were good, but because they both just seemed like little *****es to me.

While all of that is true, he would be far less hated if he'd had a more respectable NBA career.
