Two in less than a week...I'll be interested to see how Fran handles this and whether it continues to be a problem. I guess we'll see how accountable they really are? What happened to Pittman or was that ever made public? I wonder if the only way to punish a redshirt freshman is running or what? Anyone have any idea.

Two arrests? Did I miss something? More than just Pittman?

True fish DB Broderick Newton. ARticles are on the home page. Looks like he got an MIP and also some additional stuff (resisting) because he ran from the police.

I had hoped that this stuff would end with the arrival of Coach Fran. Maybe it will someday, but I'm disappointed in these two young men. I expect better of full scholarship athletes. Maybe I'm just too optimistic.

That's unfortunate. Young people are gonna make some errors in judgement, but some mistakes are pretty easy to avoid. Putting your athletic career in jeopardy isn't worth a beer at a party.

I like Fran's line in his Friday with Fran that stated that more is expected of these kids when they choose to become Division I athletes. I love the way he stated "they choose." Right or wrong, they are under a microscope and must act accordingly. Sure, these were just two silly, college freshman mistakes, but they need to be avoided if you're a full ride scholarship holder.

I'm disappointed Broderick got caught.

I would've bet he could've outran those po'po's.

If this is the worst you have, then you're doing pretty well. The most recent one was for drinking in a private apartment. Few college students aren't guilty of that. Even on the resisting arrest, I'd wait for more details before getting too upset. Something sounds fishy about that story. I do feel for you because you hate to have any arrest even if it does turn out to be something bogus.

Guys, an mip is not that big a deal. When I was in college, it was a $60 fine and you were through with it, like a ticket. Fact is, it is only beer. Its not like he got a DWI or anything. It sounds to me like he was at a party, and the cops busted it, and he ran, like I did many times my fresman through junior years.

MIPs aren't that big of a deal but anytime there is a report released and a player is charged with a crime, no matter how small, it reflects poorly up that university. (i.e. Chris Rix and his parking woes at FSU)

BTW, my last mip cost me $352, 10 hours CS, 180 days deferred, and an alcohol awareness class, and that was in 2001. I'd be willing to bet his penalty may be steeper than your $60+ fine.

While the MIP itself is not a big deal, what the hell was a member of our football team doing out (even at a private residence) drinking the night before a game?

Even if he's not going to play a down this year, he's a member of the team and should be conducting himself as such.

What happene to this?

Some coaches take their team to a movie together on Friday nights. There's nothing wrong with that. It's just not our way. We go to work. No cell phones. No in-room movies. Security personnel make sure we stay uninterrupted. Family waits until after the game.

I believe AgTimes, in one of its many posts over there, has a list of those men who were on the "travel" team and a list of those men who suited up for the game but would not play. Mr. Newton may have been on the second list and not have been under supervision on Friday night.

A poor decision on Mr. Newton's part (like 98% of us have done when we were his age) but hopefully he will learn from it. A good friend was a teacher of his in Aledo and has glowing things to say about Mr. Newton and his character; so hopefully this was a mistake.

I do have a question though - when did Jarvis Mayes leave the team as it is shown in the Beagle article?

I'm just glad Fran is holding these young guys accountable. Hopefully, they will learn and move on. It won't be a tu situation where it wasn't there car, it wasn't their pot, etc.

I know one thing, I drove down Welborn past the practice field Friday afternoon and Tate Pittman was running sprints by himself where everyone could see him. The guy looked whipped.

MIP is nothing. He should have ran faster. The majority of college students party, and I wouldn't expect the athletes that aren't even playing in the games to party any less. Too bad he got caught!

seriously...its an MIP and a DWI.

the DWI is serious, but we don't know how much he had to drink and under what circumstances. is it right? no...but its being taken care of.

MIP - i seriously doubt 99% of posters here can say they didn't drink under the age of 21.

this is why i think dogging texas for the dibbles deal is so stupid...for the exact same reason that dogging fran and these kids is wrong. they're 18. they make mistakes, the same mistakes we all made in college. get a life and let it go, people.

Not meaning to minimize DWI, because it is a serious crime. However, if you are underage I believe you can be charged with DWI for just a trace of alchohol. I'm not a criminal attorney but that is my understanding. Don't know if that is what happened here but it does seem unfair when athletes are reported to be charged with a DWI and in reality they may have had one beer, two hours before driving. Unfortunately, the press reports don't mention this and everyone assumes the worst.

No judgment here but the notoriety of all this reflects on the College Station police department too.
Skihorn
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Stavr: Now that you mention the PD, I remember that one of my "friends and family law" situations actually happened in CS. However, it may have been the campus police. This friend was pulled over and arrested even though he claimed he had NOTHING to drink. The cop didn't do a breath test but simply smelled alcohol and "failed" him on the sobriety test by his taking eleven steps instead of ten when walking the straight line. Since he was underage, that was enough for an arrest. The case was dismissed.

I'm not suggesting either of these Aggies are innocent or that cops are out to get them. I really don't know any facts and have no opinion. I do know that some cops get a little carried away with underage drinking enforcement around a college campus.

As I think was stated above, MIP is a pain in the butt now compared to 5-10yrs ago. Back then all you had to do was pay a fine, now it is much more complicated. I agree it isn't that big of a deal. Hell, back in the day I got three. Some of my friends got double digits. Anyway, I just wanted to make the point that it isn't as simple as paying a fine anymore.

The Eagle article had Pittman's BAC and it was well over the legal limit.

And in the case of Newton, I'm much more troubled by the fact that he apparently ran away from an officer than the fact that he was drinking at a college party.

Both cases have to do with being accountable and it doesn't appear that either of these two were.

Teddy,

I think you hit the nail on the head...I think it was a poor choice to be drinking period if you are underage and especially if you are a football player, in season, on a Friday night. But I know it goes on and that isn't the biggest issue. To me the fact that he tried to evade arrest is the worst part of it all. And a DWI is extremely serious!!! People die when others drive drunk. We rip tu anytime any of their players get arrested for anything yet we make excuses and downplay it when it happens to an Aggie. I can think of a few other players who have been arrested in the last few years too for stuff similar to this. I just don't want to see it becoming a new trend. Hopefully Fran will put an end to all of this.
houstontexan
How long do you want to ignore this user?
fran's not going to put an end to this...this will ALWAYS be a part of college football. they're 18-22 year old college kids and they're going to make mistakes until the end of time. they're going to smoke weed, drink and drive, fight, drink underage, etc every now and again but it will be dealt with and as long as it is, there isn't anything me, you, or fran can do about this. as long we stay out of the kstate/neb beating your girlfriend, assaulting students, etc genre, i'm fine with the occational problems we have.
