Issues with rankings

1. tu has at least 3-4 grade risk from what I hear
2. Their average star 3.42 with 1 Gray shirt per numbers
3. Our average star 3.61
4. They have no answer on offense. Their two weakest positions are o-line and QB. They have 0 QBs and several o-line but only 1 is a 4 star or higher
5. Our weakness is mainly LB depth and constant secondary play. We have added one if the top Juco LB that will add immediate depth. All other LB will be healthy. We have also added three 4 star safeties (someone will mist likely moving to CB) and one 4 star CB
5. We have Chavis to help our talented, but very underwhelming D.
6. They are changing to the spread with no experienced coach

I agree about the NSD part, but class rankings do indeed matter. The four playoff teams have all been cosiatently having Top 10 and multiple recent Top 5 Classes. We could have had a Top 5 class but dont seem able to close it.

We can pound our chest and scream that we play in the SEC and we have the best stadium in the country and the best facilities and the best this and the best this and the best that and blah, blah, blah. On the other hand, we aren't there yet: We aren't a USC, an OSU, an OU, an Oregon, a 'Bama, etc. To get "there" we need to prove it on the field...we are getting "there" but we aren't "there" yet. KInda like we are climbing that ladder and we are two rungs from the top.

By all counts we have at least 28 open slots this year, maybe 29. So I'm not sure that is a "lot" more.

That said, I don't care what Texas has as long as they are not directly stealing kids from us, which they did Malik. Can't really complain about Boyd because our staff clearly screwed the pooch on that one, leaving him to stand in the corner by himself for months on end.

That said, I still believe we did a much better job of filling needs in our class. Just looking at stars or numbers doesn't tell much of a story. If there were 25 5* players out there and they were all WRs and you signed them all you'd have the #1 class in the country but you would have crippled your team. Texas has virtually no one in their offensive class that I would want (I'd want McNeal, but I'd want him at LB where he belongs). Defense is a different story though. They have about a half-dozen there that any of us would love to have.

Just heard an interesting stat yesterday on ESPN. There are zero former "5 star" HS recruits on the Seahawks and Patriots roster combined.

We got KM. That is all.

Plus stars aren't necessarily inductive of how a player will perform thru their college careers

I disagree. I want the players our coaching staffs wants and sees potential in. And their staff wants a lot of our guys, while we want few of theirs. To me their staff values our class more than we value their's, thus our class is better than theirs. But I also feel the star system is garbage.

Strong showed up in Austin and had to compete against coaches that had 24+ months of relationship development with some of these kids, the fact that in less than 12 months he is likely going to sign a better class than a&m in year 1 vs year 3 for sumlin says a lot (despite going 6-7 which is a very similar record he had following his purge of the Louisville program)

Why is it that when Sumlin and Strong want the same kid, they pick Sumlin by far most of the time?

I'm sorry, I must have missed Texas getting commits from Ezekial Elliott and Jalin Marshall type players on offense this year, not to mention, AGAIN, the huge whiff at QB. Ohio State is stacked with a crapload of 4 star OL as well and a few coveted WR/athletes. They aren't emulating shat from Ohio State without a whole lot more talent on offense from BOTH players AND coaches.

This is not counting our juco players were getting. We have one OL that made 1st team All-American. Those JUCO players can come in and contribute much fast than than HS players can. But doing that I understand that is quick fixes for us. But we're in a situation after kicking off 11 players last year with character issues that we needed to do it. Hopefully we will get back to recruiting all HS players and developing them to be ready after a year or two.

A&M has gone from 11 to 9 to 8 wins. We didn't finish in the Top 25. So not sure why everybody thinks we're up?

However, next season our win total is going to rise. Thanks to Sumlin's last 3 classes growing up, more depth, and most importantly, the addition of Chavis. Combine that with the Kyle Field finally being finished so recruits can see the atmosphere in person, and our recruiting will only get better next year.

Texas is playing the "return us to dominance" sales pitch with a new staff, and are selling immediate playing time. The coaching staff is shrugging off the losing season as a byproduct of kicking Mack's players off the team. What happens when Charlie wins 6 games again next year? And A&M wins 10? Recruiting rankings may look a little different.

Plus it has to be concerning for Texas fans to whiff on their most pressing need, QB. Who cares where your class is ranked if you don't fill your needs?

Very few Juco players are true plug n play types. Most RS and then play 2 unless they already played somewhere ala Newton, or they are early enrollees ala Josh Reynolds. And most of the instant impact guys are early enrolleees and play positions that are more dependent on athleticism over knowing the system.
