It went north to south long ways, but faced west. Downtown Bryan streets are pretty much true to direction, the rest of the town is tilted..
I think downtown Bryan was laid out on a north-south grid before the railroad came, and when it came, they pretty much threaded the right of way through that grid before resuming a NW/SE direction. As a result, the streets outside of downtown tend to be oriented either parallel with, or perpendicular to, the railroad.
