You need that for even lighting. They're also trying to eliminate shadows as much as possible. You can see from the photos that the lights do not shine straight down towards the field.
Each "bank" of lights is set up to partially illuminate the entire field. All of them combined increase the brightness over the field and prevents a Notre Dame looking game where everyone looks like they're standing on an X
To evenly light the middle of the field, you have lights along the entire sideline contributing. But when you get to the endzones, the lights at the opposite end of the stadium really aren't doing mutch for you. So you need extra lights to make up for the difference since you don't have lights well past the backline of the endzone that are contributing to the lighting of the endzone.
