Howdy Ags,
I'll get straight to it: my dad, class of 1972, is in the fight of his life against Leukemia. He got diagnosed the day after Thanksgiving, gave it the good ol' fight and went into remission in early March. We thought we were out of the woods for the foreseeable future, but it came back with a vengeance mid-May and now he needs a bone marrow transplant.
They put him through a nasty fourth round of chemo to kill the re-emerged Leukemia cells, and he has been stuck in the hospital for four weeks here in San Antonio. I've never seen my dad so utterly depressed. His body needs to produce white blood cells in order for him to fight the bugs that keep infecting him, since the white blood cells are the immune system, but it's just not happening. I need him to be motivated to fight, so that he can get his body and mind right to survive the bone marrow transplant.
The one thing that lifts his spirits is the thought of being with his fellow 12th Man come this fall, and it looks like it will be delayed, if he's able to sit in my parents' season ticket seats at all. Throughout, he's held out hope, but this Sunday will be the first piece of Aggie Football that he'll miss, by not being able to attend the San Antonio A&M Club's Coach's Night. I don't know that he's missed one since I've been alive (I remember shaking hands with RC as people lovingly grinned at the absurdity of my name tag that had the impossibly far in the future "'06" written next to my name.)
The purpose of this post is a last ditch effort to call upon the folks at TexAgs, who know stuff, to help out a fellow Ag and get my dad's story to Coach Sumlin, Eric Hyman, Johnny, really whoever in the football program, to see if they'd come say hi in the hospital to my dad while they are in town for Coach's Night or otherwise. Or maybe just write him a card, a text, or give him a call.
He's a lifelong season ticket holder, and he asked me the heart wrenching question the other day, wondering if I thought he should donate to reserve his spot in Kyle Field when the renovation is complete.
I'm his only son, he's my only dad. If there's anything any of you could do to help, I would be honored, humbled, and grateful beyond words.
His name is Don Fischer, and while he can't accept any visitors this moment, I can coordinate an arrangement or getting cards to him. Please just work through me. My email address is Barrett.Fischer at gmail.com
Thanks, from the bottom of my heart, and Gig 'em,
