Absent equipment changes I think he's right.

Billy Mays may be a complete ******-bag and dead but I think he had the answer to the concussion problems....IMPACT GEL!!!!!! Make a uniform and line a helmet with this stuff and no one will ever get hurt.

I went to a HS reunion this weekend, and not a single one of the guys I played football with in HS was encouraging (or in some cases, letting) their sons play football. I think it will take longer than 20 years, but football is in big trouble without some kind of change.

Maybe football fans should think of ways to increase the number of concussions in basketball, baseball, and soccer to even the playing field.

I doubt it too, but he does have a point about changing social norms. We are a country of wimps now, I can see more rule changes, even laws restricting contact, less parents letting kids play eventual the games popularity will erode. In 20 years it may be a much different game than now.

Yeah, bunch of wimps that don't want their kids to have brain injuries. You're so tough, agnzona.

A lot of NFL players don't want their children to play football because they've seen first hand how it impacts people. Are these the wimps you are talking about?

I'd love to see some internet badasses go out and take a full speed helmet to helmet from an elite football player in 2013 and come back to post about the experience.

A lot of people making these comments played football back when it was more physical and legal, like hitting below the waste, crack backs, blowing up the QB, and no "defenseless" crap.

Just wait until the first on field death occurs. It has happened in arena league football before. It's just a matter of time.

My brother and I both played all the way through high school, and both big fans of college football. However, his 2 sons do not play football, and are not encouraged to either. Not sure if it's a safety thing or because of the way little league is run in the small town where they live. I don't think we will see football fall off the face of the earth, but you can bet there will be changes. Sports evolve.

I had a doctor in the 90's tell me that high school football wasn't worth the injuries and damages unless I legitimately expected a college scholarship. I'd imagine parents are getting sterner advice today.

You serious clark?

Football is the number one sport in the US and it isn't even close. The amount of money to be made alone makes it an impossibility that it will disappear.

You are correct now, but if the economics changes due to lawsuits and public taste it could fall like a knife.

We soccer fans will welcome those of you lost in the sports wilderness once "football" eventually dies.

Exactly why it will disappear and die. Lawyers go where the money is. There's many other social reasons as well...

Football as we know it will become extinct when the "gumment" mandates having women play along side the men.

I'd also like to see them say that to the face of a 21 year old kid coming back from the war

There are also thousands of us here at home. Think about it the next time you drive by a firehouse.

It will evolve for sure, but don't see it going away unless there is a crazy string of deaths, etc. I see it evolving into Australian rules / rugby where they teach much better technique due to lack of protection. A lot of kids - even in Idaho - are getting into Rugby in the off-season and it is helping their game in the fall in a huge way.

GOALLLLLLLLLLLLL.

12th Man still works for futbol. Imagine yells the entire game with very little scoring. Basically like the Nebraska game every game.

The population is up and so are the number of kids playing high school football. The equipment is better than ever and there are more certified trainers doing a better job of caring for kids. In addition, many schools have an MD and a orthopaedic surgeon present at varsity games.
Contrary to popular opinion it is these doctors and trainers that determine if these kids can play and not coaches.

One plus of not having helmets would be less stupid jive dancing in the endzone. I believe the helmets and the pads give a sense of anonymity to the players - most would be too apprehensive to do the stupid dances.
