OP, great story. I did the same with my dad back in 2001 (Class of '02) when I got my ring. My dad is Class of '79 and he didn't have the money for his ring back then. I gave my Dad his Aggie Ring for Christmas. My Mom also finally framed his Aggie Diploma. I had never seen the man cry until that day.
