If he didnt know before the blackmail he had nothing to worry about bc there was no blackmail material. The guy wasnt stupid (well he clearly was) but he knew if there was cause for blackmail or not. Clearly there was.

edited for spelling

If this is the edited version then I am sorry that I missed the original.

Sending a minor a dick pic is pretty bad even if you think she is of age.

To the contrary, he has PLENTY to worry about. The girl doesn't have to be actually underage for the damage to be done. The initial accusation destroys his career and reputation. And of course, "But honey, it's okay, she's actually over eighteen," a conversation that went well in no marriage ever.

That is why I'm curious. Ultimately though, it doesn't matter, and is very unfortunate.

Police set bait cars to catch the bad guys. This time a bad guy baited a bad guy.

I think the obvious implication is that the blackmailer drove him to suicide. It's obviously not murder, but it's probably in the same ballpark IMHO.

I don't know if this would even remotely qualify for manslaughter, but it sure feels like the blackmailer is at least partly liable for his death.

This is sad on all accounts…On another level, it is such an astounding revelation that expert in “communication” chose to end his life than face the perils and consequences of possible sex scandal being played out.

Trolls messing with this guys life, while he was dumb enough to be involved at all in something like this... just sad, embarassing stuff. What a tangled web our libidos weave, and a crazy, sick world we inhabit.

First, obviously this is a sad situation for this girl. Sounds like she is the only victim here. I feel truly sorry for the profs family too since he choose the easy way out leaving his wife and children behind versus taking his punishment. So to me, the other two are creeps. The creep from LA should go to jail for for the rest of his life for what he did to the girl and black mailing the prof.

Having said that, I don't think the creep in LA should be prosecuted for the profs death. While its true he caused the creep (yeah sending dic pics, engaging in an online relationship, and viewing child porn are all very creepy) prof severe emotional distress, the suicide was not reasonably expected. We see this and other cases where persons are blamed for suicides when the other person fears some form of embarrassment, like the kid who committed suicide because his roommate filmed him having gay sex. That makes no sense at all. So if the prof had robbed a bank to pay the LA creep, by this logic he should guilty of that as well? Riiiight.

Edit: Anybody here naive enough to think this was his only or first online exchange with a minor?

Yikes, I remember of a student that jumped when I was there(96-01) apparently over not doing well on his finals, from a northside parking garage.

I remember the cause was credit card debt, not finals. I do think they had silver taps for him though, cause I'm pretty sure I attended. I believe they honor silver taps for suicides, but that's why they don't play it to the West direction.

Not to derail the thread, but I just wanted to point out that the above is not true.

The girl isn't the only victim here. He left behind a wife with two autistic children to care for. This is just sad in so many ways

Burnsey came nowhere close to "nailing" it. Terrible analysis.

Carl, myself the father of an autistic child, I cannot begin to imagine the situation he left behind. It was selfish and tragic. My heart goes out to his family. They are not victims - a word that so many use to the point it can be just about anyone - at least not in a legal sense. If you want to say they are victims, then I can claim all of us are victims as well. Didn't we lose a prof, a teacher, and an Aggie? It's not the same is it? The girl was the true victim. The rest of us are just at a loss.

Silver Taps is not played toward the EAST because the sun will never rise again for that STUDENT. Professors are not students, and therefore would not be given a Silver Taps. If he was a former student, he can be honored at Muster.

Fair enough, but I still feel the person this hurts the most is his wife. She has to bear the weight of his decisions and the louisiana man's actions for ever. I would consider her a victim in all of this.

It seems to me maybe he didn't "know" know she was a minor, but he would have known she was young and he certainly never checked her ID. So in no way was he innocent.

That being said I hope this LA guy never sees the light of day.

This analogy is so dumb. Obviously if your life is going to be negatively impacted in a material way because of someone else's action, you are a victim of that action.

Being married to someone who took their own life =/= going to the same college as that person.

Isn't it possible that the prof thought the person was legal in the relationship, young girl photos were sent, then the "angry dad" enters the picture? I don't think the story presents the time line well.
