What is the best state finals game you have ever seen and why?

I will start 2002 Midland High vs Judson. I think there were 5 lead changes 4 of them in the forth quarter. Sadly I watched it from the Midland sideline.

Dillon High v West Cambria

Best narrative had to be the 88 final between Carter and Judson. Had Judson face anybody else they would have crushed them, but Carter was loaded (and not eligible).

Best game? I remember a Stephenville/laMarque game that was bananas.

The 95 game between Permian and Judson also was pretty good.

That Midland game immediately game to mind. They weren't even picked to make the playoffs that year but somehow made it to the title game and had it won, only to have Judson complete a deep ball at the last second to win the game. Incredibly exciting and emotional finish.

The Plano East/Tyler game was one of my favorite high school games of all time.

So was Plano beating Highland Park in the last two minutes on a touchdown drive followed by an onside kick with under a minute left. Think that was 1977 too, Lance Mcelheny at HP

In the famous John Tyler-Plano East game, many folks know the two commentators who ended up in the movie Varsity Blues, but the third guy was Coach Mike Zoffuto, who coached me in Mt. Pleasant my senior year and also coached at Lake Highlands, which is why he says he's going to throw up... Coach Zoffuto was the greatest coach I ever had, and led us to win a district championship in'79 by beating the No. 1 ranked Paris Wildcats 7-6, in what has been described as one of the biggest upsets in Texas football... made even better since Coach Z called the upset and correct score in the pep rally that afternoon. Texas Football- gotta love it!

I was at that game. Those John Tyler onside kicks were ridiculous. Guyer didn't have a clue.

Agree with OP. That 2002 Midland Judson game was unbelievable. Lead changes all over the place and the the bomb right a after Midland scored to give Judson the win. Perfect pass. The receiver was on a flat out sprint. Half the crowd went nuts the other was in absolute shock.

As mentioned, the JT-Plano East Game in 1994 was not a state final , was a 3rd round game... But was one of the greatest of all time. Still have the tape of the replay of the game that was aired on ESPN 2 complete eith the Plano east

Was at the 2001 Westlake/Lufkin game. That game was amazing. When Reggie took over it was lights out.

Duncanville vs Converse Judson 1998

Good guys won.


Duncanville won due to a late 4th quarter punt return.

1965 Wills Point vs White Deer . Because lots of friends and relatives involved and ive always heard about it. Not as good as John Tyler, but fun nonetheless

1991 Groesbeck v vernon at the astrodome. Won at the very end on an interception.

2004 Tyler Lee vs. Spring Westfield was a good one.

2006- Southlake Carroll vs. Westlake.

2010 3A Chapel Hill vs. Henderson was one of the best ones I've ever been too. Henderson's QB, now the QB at Cornell, pulled off a major upset over a loaded Chapel Hill team and played the whole game with a broken hand.

My dad's best memory is his senior year at Belton when they beat Houston Carver 5-2 in a playoff game.

I was part of a freshman year game that lost 0-2 to Lampasas. That was pretty piss poor.

Madison v. Westlake was amazing with VY and Chad Scroeder at QB. In the astrodome. Miss that place. Also not a title game.

Favorite title game was Katy vs. Southlake in 04 I think?

As a graduate of Plano East who was present at the game in '94 - this brings me a tiny bit of closure....wait, no I still want to throw up when I think about it.

2009 Westlake vs. Euless Trinity

I was watching a friend who played for Westlake, so I was pissed when they lost in OT. Great game though.

I remember the Stephenville vs La Marque game. I think it was '98.

And Stamford vs Mason last year was exciting in 1A.

2004 Kilgore vs Lincoln. Kilgore returned a blocked FG IN 2 OT to win 33-27. Awesome game.
