1988 Wed. Nov 23 Austin,TX - (day before Turkey Day game - Thur Nov 24th).

Austin resident A&M Classmate bud and bop were intent on going to DKR to watch Ags go through day-before-game drills.

Decided to smuggle in four five foot 3/4 inch iron poles to serve as side frames for huge homemade bed-sheet sign (sign for anticipated post-game Ag celebration in DKR's north zone).

Had camera taped to top of poles as if poles were to be leg extensions for camera.
Camera had no film.
Aggie bud's daughter was a t.u. student and had sip ball caps and large t-shirts. (Without her knowing they were temporarily borrowed.)
bop and bud walk through open north DKR tunnel (no security) and onto track. Set up and start snapping empty camera.
Then over north zone retainer wall we crawled and walked up 15-20 rows. Set-up and started snapping camera again.
Finally we reached top of DKR's old north zone.
There located was a large concrete platform (where TV crews would occasionaly set up). We pretended to be taking photos from that platform.
Stadium was practically empty except for Aggie team, coaches, trainers and sip maintenance folk.
For a while we sit on platform, and then unnoticed hide poles under the last row of bench seats.
Game day we arrive early with endzone tickets. Smuggled bed sheet sign in a backpack. (Yea, before 9/11 backpacks were not checked.)

We go to our hiding spot. Poles still there.

Near end of game. Duct taped poles together (for two individual 10 foot extended poles). Then attach sign.

As clock ticked down we hold up the only large sign in north DKR.

Sign simply read: "Adieu t.u."

Sips booed but no sip tried to remove sign (as north Zone was full of delirious happy Ags).

Ags 28 - sips 24...at a 1988 DKR !

I think I saw sideline guy at the Rice game a few weeks back. West side, second deck, around the 40 yard line. Said out loud to the older crowd around me, "Hey, I think that's Sideline Guy!" Sadly, no other TexAg'ers were around me.

Don't care. Still felt cool to see the myth. The legend.

Now that I think about it, shouldn't it be an imperative to get him back on the field at Bama in 3 weeks. You don't mess with what works.

I what the sideline guy does now for fun?
