Serious question, is it owned by the University or the Athletic Dept.? does the Athletic Dept. have to pay any type of usage fee or lease for using? IIRC, the Athletic Dept. rents Reed Arena form the University or the County or someone. I ask because there is some debate over who is paying for the upgrades. I would think the owner would, but who is the owner?

You don't own that field, the taxpayers do.

Inform the taxpayers they owe $450M for renovations. The facilities have deteriorated badly. Start remodeling the Restrooms!

The Athletic Department is a Department of Texas A&M University. If someone in the Athletic Department buys a stapler for the football offices, Texas A&M University is the owner of a stapler. The Athletic Department is not some separate entity.

Actually, they are a separate entity. The athletic facilities are owned by the university, and the athletic department pays the university rent for the facilities.

I know this because at A&M tennis camp, we had to pay the university to use the courts in the summer, as well as pay a fee for street usage for the streets on campus. Also had to pay for the busses to take us from the dorms to the courts.

No they are not. It is one entity. What you are seeing is department accounting designed to show you how individual departments are doing. So, department of rec sports pays the maintenance on tennis courts and the swimming pool at the rec out of their budget. Athletics transfers money to rec sports because they use this facility as well. This way you can see the full cost of the tennis courts and swimming pool on one sheet.

Legally, it is one entity. No departments actually own anything. If Loftin wanted, he could transfer the rec center and the tennis courts to under the athletic department control and rec sports couldn't do anything about it.

So, does the Athletic Dept pay for maintenance to Kyle? Or rent? Or a % of gate? Just wondering how that setup works. Didn't Byrne once complain about the expense of having to "rent" Reed Arena? I don't think he ever mentioned Kyle. Not sure how he two agreements differ.

The athletic department is under it's own budget, it gets no $ from the university/state, it is self supporting. This is the reason coaches can hire their sons. Funding for any renovations come from athletic department funds, this includes donations. I retired after 38 years with tamu, I worked with budgets, for all you sidewalk lawyers.

Those are two different things. Having its own budget vs. being a legal entity. What you said is true, but it is still one legal entity. The university owns everything.
