From henceforth I shall claim 1917, 1919, 1927, 1939, 1956, 1976, and 1994. They are all MNC anyway, so nobody can prove otherwise. I saw it in TA so you know it's fact. Expect BZ to write an article on it tomorrow

1994 - now you're being ridiculous. 17 and 19 ...no one is around to remember that. I was there for most all of those games in 1994 and we were not National Champions. We look like little *****es with some of these

The Associated Press (AP) started awarding National Championships in 1936. For MNCs after 1936, most schools won't claim a national championship unless it was awarded by AP, UPI, BCS or some similar national poll based on numerous selectors.

Prior to 1936, anyone can make arguments based on computer models, etc. But for USC to claim 1939 when they finished third in the AP is "bush" league.

I'm about an hour into some research on 1919. There are four "recognized" national champions:

Harvard
Illinois
Notre Dame
Texas A&M

Here are a few facts I founds trying to narrow it down to one champion:

Illinois lost to Wisconsin in week 8 at home 14-10.
Harvard tied Princeton in week 8 by a score of 10-10.
That leaves only Notre Dame and Texas A&M unbeaten and untied of the 4 recognized champion contenders.

Here is a quick comparison of ND and A&M that season by stats:

Avg Margin of Victory
ND 20.2 pts
A&M 27.5 pts

Pts scored per game
ND 25.4
A&M 27.5

Point Allowed per Game
ND 5.22
A&M 0

Total points allowed on the season
ND 47
A&M 0

ND beat Nebraska by 5 and Army by 3 and Morningside by 8. All others were double digit wins.

Texas A&M beat tu by 7 and Southwestern by 7. All other wins were double digit wins.

I haven't done a strength of schedule analysis, but tu was at least in the conversation about a national title in 1918.

It would seem that we have a legit claim to at worst a shared title with ND in 1919.

I support my Aggies 100% win or lose, without complaint and without reservation.

1917 and 1919 should be recognized A&M championships. Simply put, we were the best team in the nation those years by just about any criteria.

USC's claim to the 1939 championship is pure bull**** - a team with 2 draws is in no way better than our team that was undefeated.

BUT 1917 and 1919 are different.

1927 is not as clear cut, but we did have the same record as the top teams (no team was undefeated with no draws that year). I personally wouldn't claim it, but we do have an argument (because SWC teams were perennially underrated at the time).

1956 we have no legit claim to. Oklahoma demolished everyone that year, went undefeated (and untied) and we had a tie on our record.

1994 we also have no quarrel with, as both Nebraska and Penn State were undefeated (and untied) and we had a tie on our record. Regardless, probation made us ineligible for the championship, and I doubt they would allow us to retroactively claim it.

So basically, I would be very happy seeing A&M claim 1917, 1919, and 1939. If we claim 1927, I wouldn't disagree, but I also wouldn't lead the charge to have us do so. Other than that, we don't have a legitimate argument.

1917, 1919, and 1939 should be easy years to claim the MNC. The Aggies were awesome each of those years - -

It wasn't just a tie, it was a tie to one of the worst teams in D1 Football. We were also on probation and ineligible to participate in a bowl game. The 94 team was a nice one but please do not insert them into this conversation again. As the earlier post mentioned - it is embarrassing.

Someone else posted that at Fish Camp they are also claiming 1895 or 1896 or one of those years where we didn't lose as a national championship as well. That would be 5 which is more than the Sips!

I'm pretty sure Alabama has claimed every national championship in which a clear, universal consensus does not exist.

This needs to be brought up on Texags radio with Jason Cook next time he is on. It should also be brought to the attention of the new AD. With a change in conference, coaching, AD, and stadium renovation, it is a perfect time to stake our claim to '17, '19, and perhaps '27. Other schools such as Tennessee, Michigan State, USC, & Alabama use titles that are much more questionable to establish their programs place in history and recruit with. I've always wondered why we didn't claim the unscored upon years as titles.

If you want to start counting random poles and retroactive poles Texas would have around 9 MNC. As for 1895, you should know that Texas was undefeated and unscored upon that year so... I guess we should put that up as well.

dumb.

Who wouldn't allow it? It's a Mythical National Championship. Anyone can claim anything they want. Do you really think Alabama was voted #1 by the AP 12 times? What would they do? Bend A&M's dog tag and send the football team to bed with no supper?

Agree with William C G and Kampfers comments. 1917, 1919 and 1939. 1927 is debatable. Comment about AP starting to award MNCs in 1936 leaves everything prior open to interpretation and discussion. At least 3 - possibly 4!!

Did I see someone mention Alabama's championships?

The 1941 national championship is a fairy tale. Alabama (9-2) had lost to Mississippi State (SEC champs) and Vanderbilt. The Tide finished ranked 20th in the Associate Press Poll, behind four SEC teams.

Id say you have a much more solid argument for '17 and '19 considering the company you will be keeping from now on.

Vato, looking at your earlier post about teams in the 1800s. 1. We played like three games and they were against high schools - don't be stupid. 2. If your goal in this campaign is to get us past the sips, it won't work. They have claim to 9 if they chose to start doing the same thing. For the record, I wouldn't mind the university finally recognizing 17 and 19 but won't lose any sleep if we don't.

Texas A&M already claims 1919, 1927 and 1939. We just need to add 1917.

1917 270-0
1919 275-0
1927 262-32
1939 212-31
