Knowing history or not is irrelevant with something like this. Try being a kind, loving person. It may be your right to say whatever you please, but restraint is what makes us goo people.

This thread is hilarious!
First, it's the battle flag ( in part ) not the 1st National ( the stars & bars)... No biggie , common mistake.
I loathe PC & the never ending race card concerning the battle flag. It's old / stale.... The battle flag was/ is just that, a battle flag...
Fly whatever you damn well want to fly!!!

Of course, y'all know that is a proximity of the confederate battle flag. That is not "Stars and Bars" right?

If you are going to howl one way or another, at least learn your history.

I think Coach Haith will use it on recruiting trips. It should be a real winner. Maybe Coach Sumlin can adopt something similar. Hmmm......

I don't think Coach Haith will will be sending that out in his recruiting literature. I could be wrong.

You guys talking about not knowing the history as if it shouldn't matter. You are right, it shouldn't matter, but it does to people. The meaning has changed.

Look at the swastika. That represents peace in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. You would never know that in today's world. You all would scream to high hell if someone walked in with a swastika tattooed on their arm (intent being peace) but would high five the nearest redneck that had that flag tattooed on them.

Gay used to mean happy. You all just think of two dudes who like to swashbuckle.

Perception is reality. Please, if you have a black co-worker, hang that flag up in your office or cubicle and watch you get called in by management in a heart beat.

I still use the original meaning of gay, and I don't like peace, so I don't sport a swastika, but I'll fly my battle flag all I want.

We aren't at work. Beautiful thing about this country is that, on my own, personal time, I can do WHATEVER THE **** I WANT. It doesn't matter if it's offensive. I don't walk out of my house wondering and checking to see if I might offend someone. That's never my intention. I Just am going to be myself.

So the perception is that PC anal people are gay. ( see what I did there? )

I love a good cease fire, but peace, man, when those hippies talk about peace, it offends me man. They need to be respectful and thoughtful of my feelings man.

Um, no you can't. You can certainly fly the confederate battle flag if you want, but you can't do whatever you want. Also, no one here is debating the legality of the flag. Hell, it would be legal for you to wear burnt orange to all of our home football games and sing Texas Fight the whole time, but we'd all still call you an asshat.

Ha this flag is seen on a regular basis all over the state of South Carolina. Now personally as an African American I don't give a flip about the flag one way or the other. If people want to cling to a time that happened over 150+yrs ago and have battle reenactments about a war that they inevitably lost then I say have at it.

Doesn't offend me in the least.

My great great grandpa on my Dad's side fought and died for the CSA... there is a Confeddy flag on his grave every year we go to visit it at Fort Hood to honor their. Lots of immigrants take pride in the country of their ancestors, and I take pride in what was once the country of my ancestors. All of my ancestors on each line back to 1800 were Southern. I fly the damn flag if I want to. Mexican immigrants can pull for the Mexican soccer team if they want to.

Not the same thing. Flags and logos are used to represent ideas and to promote groups. You will always see Anti-discrimination groups in the U.S. fly the American flag. But have you ever seen any of them fly the Battle Flag?

Anti Semitic groups have used the Battle Flag in the past and have given the flag a bad rep. You may view it as cultural icon of 'southern pride', but potential recruits may view it in an entire different way. The flag itself is not racist and was never intended to be used as a racist symbol. It just happens to be that anti-semitic groups and hate groups have used them to represent themselves. And because of that, the flag will NEVER be PC ever again.

Laugh/cry at the closet racists whose schooling failed them that ACTUALLY THINK the Civil War wasn't about slavery. Go read South Carolina's declaration of secession for a start, then realize that you're not fooling anyone with your apologism.

I'm proud to be from Texas and the South. I hate slavery and its lasting effects in racism.

I agree that action was needed by the Southern states whose rights were being trampled by Big Government. I wish Texas would have chosen "Option #3" and seceded to its own Republic.

I hate that the racist freaks have stolen the confederate flag as their symbol, and unfortunately, that means that I shouldn't use it to show my Southern pride unless I also feel that way.

I think the right flag to represent my stance is the National Flag of the Confederacy and not the Battle Flag used by the army.

Ok guys, I am here for confession. I am the Mizzou fan who created that image. Let me stress that this is absolutely not an official Mizzou release, it is fan art.

I first want to apologize to anyone who this may actually offend. When I created it, I did so without thinking of any racial overtones, because well... I just don't think like that. I simply used the "stars and bars" as it is a symbol of southern heritage. There is no hidden meaning or agenda behind my design. I just wanted a "southern look".

After hearing both sides of the argument, I have decided to remove the image from my accounts. I do not want to offend anyone, nor bring any bad press to Mizzou. I just got overly wrapped up in the SEC excitement and overlooked something I probably should not have.

The fact is, History is written by the winners and the more devestating the war, the harsher the history is upon the losers. The south was not entirely evil and racism was on both sides of the Mason Dixon. Robert E Lee lived in view of DC, but supported his state of Virginia first before the United States because he believed in the rights of the local government over the federal. His estate was turned first into a mockery before it was transformed into the country's most solemn memorial.

I don't think badly for what the south stood for, but the defenders need to understand how history perceives them.
