Showers does have a cannon but he rarely he uses it. He doesn't throw it downfield much and throws to the check down a lot. That's why he's a safe guy, but not a playmaker.
First off you dont have to throw the ball 50 yds downfield to "use" your cannon. Zip on short to immediate throws as well as throws to the far sidelines on out routes will show arm strength and definitely expose a weak arm. JFF could not make these throws in the spring game and surpisingly it seemed like he had to muscle the ball to receivers running short/immediate routes to the sideline.
Secondly, there is nothing you can use that says Showers throws to the checkdown a lot. He has thrown one pass in an actual game and then there is the Spring game. The only reason I believe he was throwing short passes most of the day was because those were in fact his first read. Our offense is going to thrive off short quick passes that bust open a la Swope's touchdowns in the spring game. Reminiscent of a Saints style offense.
The only reason why JFF was throwing the ball downfield was because the pocket broke down (possibly), he scrambles outside of the pocket, the play breaks down, and he finds a receiver who broke his route and went down field.
JFF has amazing potential and is probably in the top 5 athletes on the team. He is not QB ready though. One thing we cannot have is turnovers next year, and a smart, intelligent quarterback that can read through progressions will help us win a whole lot more than one who will most likely throw a pic for every TD. I hope JFF makes it on to the field as a QB, but he has a lot of work to do to become an effective D1 QB, especially against SEC defenses. He can longer depend on his athleticism to be successful.
Sorry for the novel...
