$Bill may have a slice of regret heading into the SEC, but not me!

It sounds like he still isn't on board with the move.

yeah that article has a weird tone...byrne sounds very reluctant and almost broken...as for tu, no crap they didn't value us. that's WHY we left, it's not a result of the move. i still want to know the truth about what, exactly, was said between us and tu on a joint network.

I think you misread the article...not being a fan of all the admin BS doesn't mean youre not on board with the move...

The tu part is bs...he had to have known they would do their best to black-ball us...a petulant move on their part...

What I picked up from the article is that he would liked to have stayed and worked things out with the big 12, but he is fully on board with SEC now that we made the move

He never was on board with the move. Go back and look at his face during the announcement at the zone. Fact is he never has been a good AD regarding football period. I have serious doubts that he would have fired Sherman on his own, and I think he was not driving the train on firing Sherman and hiring Sumlin. The last good football coach we had was hired by Bum Bright. Hopefully this hire works out that well.

From my armchair, $Bill may be a hurdle to the football team's future growth and development in the SEC.

Of course Bill never wanted the move. If football struggles in the SEC, and there is a chance that happens, it will cost Bill his job.

Bad spot for $Bill. He was t on board with the SEC and will get fired if going to the SEC doesn't workout like the rabid fanbase is sure it will. I'm sure he doesn't like being undermined by Internet posters.

And we don't like higher football ticket prices, increased donations, and a 500 football team while track, soccer, womens basketball, golf, and baseball flourish. Mediocre to bad football will undermine him, not internet posters. Fund a recruiting coordinator for football for just one example.

Calling someone whose email he did not like and going off and insubordination from his office should have been enough to show him the door along with Sherman. I was surprised he was not fired. Maybe because we did not want disruption during the conf move. I think he is gone soon one way or the other.

If everyone remembers, $Bill was amazingly silent during the entire discussion and eventual move to the SEC. If it was not for the guts and leadership of Dr. Loftin, I am convinced that the move would have never happened. So we lose a rivalry with t.u., screw them. They have more butt hurt to play OU, so let 'em have them. I would for one look forward and relish the fact that we are in the best conference in the country and more than look forward to the Ags playing Bama, Auburn, LSU, South Carolina, etc.

This article tells me he is getting heat for:

1. Turning down the LHN.

2. Losing the tu rivalry.

He speaks of the SEC like it is a future he won't be part of.

Good riddance. His reliance on the Directors Cup and non-revenue sports will bite him in the ass this year since it is unlikely that we will finish above the top 30.

When I read this article I thought it was dated December... All of these quotes are old news.

There has been a rumor floating around that Byrne is going to retire at the end of this sports calendar year.

He has done some very good things and overall raised the AD. However, he was completely unprepared to answer the lhn and that is one reason he was on the sidelines during the SEC move.

I just hope we hire another professional AD.

Good God. You Bill Byrne haters are reading WAY too much into that article. That's a very misleading headline. This is more of a Texas A&M check-up article than the tell-all regret confession of Bill Byrne that y'all are making it out to be.

Good points, Cardboardboxer:

Looks like a good move to me, plus, he indicated that he got back to them but they said it was too late. From where we're sitting now, it seems like the best long-term move to not be a part of it.

2. Losing the tu rivalry.
I don't blame him for a decision made by t.u. Plus, I'll take the trade any day.

Perennially potential good-to-great teams in our conference:

Big 12: t.u., OU

SEC: Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia (with a nod toward Arkansas and South Carolina who seem to be rising, not only in Football performance, but also in money, which we should be doing soon, too.)

I've seen 'em play since way back when
And they've always had the grit.
I've seen 'em lose and I've seen 'em win

$Bill helped created the Big 12 while at Nebraska. He never wanted it to end.

If he is not onboard with the SEC then show his ass the door and get an AD that would embrace our new conference so we succeed in Football. $Bill had me then lost me when he started pulling that no TV for Football until the season was about halfway over a few years back. That was the dumbest thing I had seen in a while. And we took shots in recruiting because of it.

Read the article.

Byrne:
quote:
I think it was a brilliant move to go to the Southeastern Conference, which screams stability. No one is trying to get out of the Southeastern Conference. That's not true of the current conference we're in."

Byrne is a Big 12 guy, that's just the truth by the numbers at this point. His life's greatest work will be Big 12 Nebraska and Texas A&M just by the numbers he won't get to really enjoy a long term run in The SEC. It's the same reason the SEC move is a young persons move and is embraced with great passion by younger generations (new army and all that BS) while a reluctance is seen in older generations who might not like the big 12 but still see it as the closest A&M can get to the SWC and therefore we should stay because loyalty and tradition dictate it. Both the Big 12 and SEC have pluses and minuses...the SEC won out because tradition and loyalty and a faint hold on the past don't pay the extravagant bills you need to win these days.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I know a LOT of older Ags (and probably would be considered one)...and I wouldn't say there's reluctance among most of us.

There WOULD'VE been much more reluctance, but then Sip showed its arse over the T-Day game and pretty much nailed the coffin shut.

Clarification: not to say older Aggies are against the move but that the only people I've seen against it are older Ags. The closest "anti-SEC" feelings I've seen from younger Ags is lamenting the loss of the Texas game. (which #1 isn't our fault and #2 good riddence in my opinion)

For the record I'm class of 10 and I've been all in with the SEC for years and can't believe this is actually happening. If i can't have the old SWC then SEC all the way!

My only Big 12 regret is that we joined the league in the first place. It was never a good fit for us.

My only regret is that we hired Bill Byrne to be our athletic director. PLEASE find someone who understands modern marketing and who will devote as much energy to football as he does to track.

Byrne's tone is sorry we couldn't work out differences in Big 12 but excited about SEC. Hoped to continue rivalry and still hopeful we will one day. I think the message is close to perfect.
