I'd love to outkick mine.

I've seen 'em play since way back when
And they've always had the grit.
I've seen 'em lose and I've seen 'em win
But I've never seen 'em quit.

The story i heard when i was a freshman was that way back when there was this pisshead who was a real ass about giving demerits for uniforms. He got kind of a reputation and other guys started saying "gig'em" when they saw him. Gig was supposed to be the nickname for the demerit

This is what happened, it was around well before the TCU game, that is where it went viral

Son in law.

His daughter got married recently, apparently. A very lucky man it would seem.

I am more inclined to buy into the term "gig'em" being military academy slang for uniform demerits that morphed over time into a general slang for applying demerits for infractions, and it is quite possible that it was conveniently useable as a reference for our rival horned frogs, which might have popularized it more as a general term.

The thumb? Well, its not uncommon for poeple to use a thumb to point to their right side or behind them as they walk by or past things. I suppose someone walking a line doing inspections might point to their side with their thumb as they walk by someone with an infraction, telling their clerk or whatever to gig that person he just walked by. Just throwing an alternative explanation out there.

Question: Damn it! Why didn't they take more careful notes about these traditions when they started them?

Answer: Because TexAgs didn't exist for people to bicker enough to prevent the traditions from ever being formed in the first place.

WOW!! I had no idea there were Ags who didn't know the source of "Gig 'Em". As in Frog gigging, flounder gigging, sucker gigging. It was about GIGGING FROGS, as in TCU.

The military "gig" is universal, not just Aggie.

You're about to play the Horned Frogs. You want to charge them with a uniform infraction or do you want to run them through with a three pointed spear??? Pinkie wanted to SPEAR them, not "charge them".

How many people that didnt know what gigging was were from Dallas .. Honestly??

well where are you from? because you didnt know where the term came from.

HINT: its not TCU, that story is false. The pinky downs story takes place in 1930. The gig em yell was around prior to that and it can be seen in the yearbook as early as 1919.

So back to your original question. Im from arlington and I actually know the term Gig 'Em didnt start with Pinky Downs and the TCU story.

And on top of that, he apparently left A&M after his sophmore year. He doesnt appear in the yearbooks as a graduate in 1906

Where did the hand symbol for "Gig'em" come from?

tough to say really. Theres a photo in the 1919 longhorn of a cadet giving a thumbs up and hes wearing a gig em button.

As with many traditions, its hard to trace them back to a singular event. We have these great stories to help explain them but sometimes they arent always true. Even the 12th Man isnt totally correct. What you can do is try to pinpoint when they first started appearing and work from there.

obviously geography isnt your strong suit either. I dont think anyone has ever referred to Arlington, TX or any part of Texas as Yankee territory.
