Jeff Fisher has ties to Houston and SEC country. I bet he can recruit and get the kids motivated to win. He has a good pedigree on the defensive side of the ball.

Here's some tidbits from Wikipedia

A native of Southern California, Fisher starred as a high school All-American wide receiver for William Howard Taft High School (Los Angeles, California) in Woodland Hills. Fisher later went on to star as a USC Trojan under coach John Robinson. During his collegiate career (1977–80), he played alongside such defensive stars as Ronnie Lott, Dennis Smith, and Joey Browner. Fisher's USC teammates also included star offensive lineman Bruce Matthews, whom he would coach years later with the Oilers and Titans. Fisher and the Trojans won a national championship during the 1978 season, and in 1980 he was honored with a Pac-10 All-Academic selection.

Team(s) as a coach/administrator:
1985 Chicago Bears
(defensive assistant)
1986-87 Philadelphia Eagles
(defensive backs coach)
1988-1990 Philadelphia Eagles
(defensive coordinator)
1991 Los Angeles Rams
(defensive coordinator)
1992-1993 San Francisco 49ers
(defensive backs coach)
1994 Houston Oilers
(defensive coordinator)
1994-2010 Houston/Tennessee Oilers/Titans
(head coach)

Jeff Fisher was a solid NFL head coach, but that is because he was a manager; college players need a firmer hand, not an ego massager. Occasionally, a Jimmy Johnson comes along, but it's more likely to find a Pete Carroll or Nick Saban--the two perspectives are are hard to mesh.

Fisher always struck me as the kind of guy that had no trouble getting in someone's face.

Notice that all of Fish's experience is in the NFL. Could he even possibly know how to recruit?

My God, what is it with this NFL/NCAA thing? He would have people to evaluate the HS talent and the assistants do most of the recruiting anyway. Do you people think this is some kind of nuclear physics or magic or something, recruiting = selling.

Damn.

XXX, some of the best college coaches such as Brown or Saban are so good at recruiting that they can stockpile talent to the point where even the best chess players can't come up with a scheme to beat them. A college HC who isn't as knowledgable in the recruiting game won't have a chance in most cases.

He'll get another NFL job when he wants it, and the NFL >> college ball when it comes to prestige..

Why do people keep recycling these same crap ideas, day in day out? I swear some of you just google "Who is a head coach?" and decide it's worthy of a topic on TA. C'mon...

HC is HC. Most coaches aspire to go from college to the NFL, not the other way around.
Pete Carroll, Lou Holtz and Nixk Saban are examples of college coaches failing(jury's out on Carroll this round..) at the NFL level.
I've never seen a successful HC at the NFL level drop into the college ranks. Sherman's positive atributes, from my understanding, are his NFL ties and the ability to get player ready to go to the combine and in touch with scouts. A successful HC from the NFL would probably have an easy time selling that same idea to new recruits.
