The Veil of Arrogance: Who is DeLoss Dodds really fooling?

November 23, 2011

The barnstorming Cover Your Own Arse tour of DeLies Dodds, the self-important leader of all things Longhorn, has built to a crescendo this week.

Dodds has hit the media circuit, trying to explain what’s good for us. Amid growing discontent for his pivotal role in the purported end to the Lone Star Showdown, Dodds’ words have massively contradicted his deeds.

It’s been a futile, almost laughable attempt to deflect the obvious. The only person Dodds fools anymore is himself.

From infamously uttering, “We are the Joneses,” and long-ago setting the template that destroyed the Big 12 as we all once knew it, Dodds suddenly has found humility.

He told the Columbia Missourian, “Does somebody think we’re being a bully? Well, that’s up to them to think we’re a bully. We want to keep the conference together. We want equal sharing.”

After nearly brokering a deal to depart the Big 12 for the Pac-12, which led directly to the Aggies finding greener pastures and safer grounds in the Southeastern Conference, Dodds now acts as if he was the savior.

After nearly brokering a deal to depart the Big 12 for the Pac-12, which led directly to the Aggies finding greener pastures and safer grounds in the Southeastern Conference, Dodds now acts as if he was the savior. {"Module":"quote","Alignment":"right","Quote":"After nearly brokering a deal to depart the Big 12 for the Pac-12, which led directly to the Aggies finding greener pastures and safer grounds in the Southeastern Conference, Dodds now acts as if he was the savior.","Author":""}
He says, “We ended up in the right place in the Big 12 and that’s where we wanted to be from the beginning … Since the beginning it’s been the place for us.”

After pitching a fit and ditching an in-state rivalry game that is much an institution as the Universities themselves, Dodds now tells the Houston Chronicle, “We didn’t put ourselves in this position, so what we are going to do is make good decisions for Texas.”

On and on DeLies go.

Pressure and uneasiness mounts around Dodds as the face and forceful executioner of the Texas-Texas A&M rivalry. Yet he continues to put up walls that inevitably will crumble around him.

Dodds has at once attempted to come off as ... a martyr: “Since the beginning, (the Big 12) has been the place for us. It’s good for our kids. We made the decision for our kids.”

A victim: “We did not put ourselves in this position ... It’s a rivalry we will miss. We are absolutely disappointed that it cannot continue.”

A spin-doctor: “We picked up a good West Virginia and a good TCU.”

A philanthropist: “We want equal sharing. We want our own network for our kids. We’ll give half of it to the university.”

The more DeLies talks, the more it becomes apparent the very thing that led to the breakup of one of the game’s greatest rivalries is ultimately what will bring it back.

Pride. Dodds certainly has proved to be a tinkerer in various Seven Deadly Sins, but he undoubtedly is the master of one.

It was pride that led to so much of Dodds’ once-respected reputation spiraling into oblivion, to the point that now Longhorns fans, administrators, coaches, even legislators and political figures pressure Dodds and Texas to renew the state’s most storied rivalry.

Dodds dared other institutions to do as he wanted, or else leave. And they did.

Andrew Kilzer, TexAgs One man's arrogance will make this sight a thing of the past ... but not forever. {"Module":"photo","Alignment":"right","Size":"large","Caption":"One man\u0027s arrogance will make this sight a thing of the past ... but not forever.","MediaItemID":3267}
He challenged the Aggies to stay in the Big 12 fold or risk being ostracized and scratched from schedules on the playing fields. And they called his bluff.

He figuratively shouted from the top of the Burnt Orange Tower with all his might, for all the world to hear, that he’s DeLoss Dodds and he knows better.

But ... he doesn’t.

Reminisce and wax poetic all you want, but Thursday night’s showdown at Kyle Field will mark the end of an era, not a rivalry.

For all the squawking about the series ending, Dodds has too much pride and not enough power to hold back the tide of emotion and political weight that simply will not let this series die.

Dodds has been a great athletic director for the University of Texas in many ways, leading unprecedented growth, construction and success financially and otherwise.

But he knows, if this is it — the final game — Dodds forever will be known as the man who killed the Texas-Texas A&M football rivalry.

By now, that fact surrounds him. His aggressive, defiant public stance in recent weeks indicates Dodds already understands his legacy has plummeted. His mission now is salvaging neither a conference nor a football game, but his own reputation.

When the final gun sounds and the lights go off at Kyle Field on Thursday night, the pressure to set aside petty egotistical games only will grow. A series will be renewed — with or without Dodds’ approval and probably sooner than the mythical standard of 2018 he set.

In the dark on Thursday night, Dodds finally will realize something everyone else already knew: The burning desire was there long before him and will be long after; this game is bigger, even, than his ego.

Lopez is an Ag Grad. He loves us. Does anyone think he's really objective though? He's not a journalist, he's an entertainer and he and Richard Justice (a UT Grad) are both trying to get as many readers as possible by stirring the pot.

That's fine, we know how it works - he's making a buck. At the end of the day, why do we care?

They beat us last night on our own field with come from behind win. When are we going to stop blaming everyone else and take some responsibility for what happens on the field?

I know this won't change many minds because everyone here wants a common enemy to blame but the real "insider"facts are these:

- Nebraska's departure and Missouri's whoring to the Big 10 threatened to tear apart the Big XII...Texas was not seeking to leave
- from a business standpoint UT explored it's options when the stability of the conference was threatened but always intended on keeping Texas and A&M together
- DeLoss is a K-State grad who appreciates the conference of Central Time Zone teams and was, again, not looking to leave or destroy the conference.
- the possibility of severing the tie with A&M by going to the PAC was what removed that deal from consideration. DeLoss was "not going to be the one to end 100+ years of rivalry"
- given assurances from all 10 remaining teams there was honest thought that the Big XII could be strengthened.
- the LHN deal was beyond anyone's expectations.
- A&M breaking that assurance and threatening the existence of the conference again created hard feelings that are still sore. Once again UT had to investigate options but the PAC was not DeLoss' preferred option. This feeling of betrayal is why Texas and other Big XII teams are not eager to schedule A&M.

Those are the facts...believe them or not...but just thought I'd share.

What does it matter?! We embarrass ourselves in the Big 12 and we're gonna do the same in the SEC. Aggies need to wake up and fix the leadership first! "Building champions" starts in the front office with a guy who can hire a coach that's built for the fight not for mediocrity.

I tend to agree a lot with the UT posters here. Our administrators elected to leave the big 12 conference. Deloss is doing what is best for the longhorns. This is not UT's fault. our administrators are at fault here. We should never have left the Big 12. The rest of you fans need to grow up and start blaming Aggie and not longhorns for this mess...

This is very poor journalism. I would rather be seen as an arrogant winner than a mediocre cry baby that gets his ass kicked year in and year out. The sips aren't holier than thou, they are winners on the field, that's the sad reality. I'm pretty sure there is more to them "just not wanting to play us" they can do what they want, when they want, with whoever they want. Maybe one day someone will come aggieland and right the ship, then maybe we will be the arrogant winners. The ins and outs of college athletics are way above the heads of any posters here, and writers for that matter.

Ags make the choice to leave the conference and now want to blame Dodds for not wanting to play them. Quit whining, get over it and move on. You think this season was tough, better start getting ready for the SEC.

Nobody has said Texas can't schedule A&M. Dodd's has said Texas will do what's in the best interest of Texas, period. He's also said we're not going to debate adding A&M because we've already got a full schedule. Like the article says, we'd have to pay seven figures to cancel one of our other opponents. Why would we do that?

Texas will play A&M eventually. But it's going to be when we can have a good natured rivalry again. Right now A&M is unabashedly campaigning for the destruction of the Big 12. **** that.

And what if t.u. had decided to join the Pac-12? According to the Bevo Beat last year "The Pac-12 appears to be working out the final details of a deal that would bring Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech to the conference, sources close to the situation told Hookem.com and the American-Statesman on Sunday morning." Doesn't sound like t.u. was too concerned about the rivalry then. As in any break up in a relationship, it's always hardest on the one being left behind.

Your world will continue to revolve around The University of Texas years after you've left the conference you shared for decades. This is the blame game that we've been hearing from aggieland forever. You will continue to be mired in mediocrity wherever you go. Since your national championship in football 72 years ago, you've had 12 head football coaches (not counting Darnell as interim.) Now you've reached the promised land of the SEC where you'll have bigger and better things to do. Resurrect Homer Norton and win a game or two. So start comparing yourselves to someone else, like LSU or Arkansas or Florida. Maybe now you'll measure up.

We did what we thought was best for our school -- money wise!!

I was totally against leaving the Big 12 -- however, a lot of our fans thought elsewise. *****ing about UT is a waste of board space. We should be *****ing about our AD and the position he has put our school in. Not looking forward to the travel times to attend games. What a freaking mess this is. Don't blame UT at all!!! some of you KIDS need to grow up

Different conferences and cultures will result in it not being the same. It's like getting a divorce but continuing to date.

It's not too late for A&M to stay. Perhaps the 'pride' issues cut both ways. Seriously, UT included the Ags in their fight song, stood by the Ags during thebonfire tragedy, and included the Ags in their plans. Hell, they even gave the Ags a farewell tribute at halftime the other night.

What did the Ags do for UT other than go on a national smear campaign? In summary, a decision was made to leave and decisions have consequences. Live with it or go back but don't walk out pointing fingers. You're a flagship school in the greatest state in the country, represent yourselves that way.

Stay??? youhavegottobekidding?

tu posters (and the ones that put an Aggie handle, just pretending in case someone bites): when you play TCU, we'll play Alabama, when you play Baylor, we'll play Auburn, when you play Iowa St. (that's pretty close geographically, isn't it?) we'll play . . . . . . . you know what I mean. We will be in a better, more competitive conference. Will we rise up? I have no doubts we will. If anyone here thinks that ALL longhorns are OK with ending the rivalry (cough, cough, Red McCombs) and ok with the LHN, just go over to their boards and you'll see some discontent.

Everyone but tu fans (and ESPN) know who screwed the conference. Let's ask Neb, Col, Missouri, etc.

When we win, you'll lose. Program strength comes from winning, not losing to better opponents.

I'm disappointed in the loss of the Thanksgiving game, but I don't see any legitimate way around it. A&M chose to take this rivalry off the field and pursue a publicity campaign against Texas. This is more than A&M simply choosing to leave the conference, they tried to burn the house down on the way out. There's no justification in Texas spending millions of dollars to buy out scheduled opponents to save a game that has far more recruiting, monetary, and emotional value for A&M than Texas.

We'll play again, but it sure seems like that shouldn't happen until A&M has calmed down a little bit. Maybe that happens in about a decade, maybe not.

AGSQWINAGAIN,

So typical of your fan base. We in no way support A&M and your decisions to leave the Big 12. We had reasons for leaving the Big 12...your's is simply hatred! come visit our boards sometime and see what we think of A&M,,you might be surprised to see that most of us are in favor of UT..Jim Rome post says it best about your school:

gThey wonft shut up. They have to go on about spirit, and old army, and red ass, and how bonfire represents the burning sensation they have in their urine to beat UT, and blah blah blah. Shut up. You start to get the feeling the entire school was built to spite UT. Forget the fact that when the Texas Legislature back in the 1870Œs passed legislation to start a state university they also decided to have a subsidiary branch of the main school(University of Texas) that would teach agriculture and mechanics. Aggies love to say their school is older, from where they get that I donft knowccthe fact is, the State intended A&M to be a branch of UT. They are like the afterbirth from the original creation. Like Danny Devito in gTwinsh. So they apparently have this complex, so much so, that they must devote their entire school to trying to prove to UT that they are just as good. All the while, nobody at UT denies that A&M is a good school, yet they wonft shut up. So they write a fight songccabout?c.Texas , and how they want to beat them. They have a Fish Camp for freshman where they tell them how bad Texas is and how good A&M and all its traditions are.

It is the worldfs largest known case of ***** envy, and it is manifested in everything A&M does. The people at A&M. Now we all have friends who went to A&M or are at A&M. There are some nice people there. Howevercthere is the Corp. East Texasf answer to dreams of ROTC kids everywhere. For every boy scout who never learned to stop playing with his GI Joe Toys, there is the Corp. Now, forget the fact that A&M will actually let people with sub-par grades enroll if they agree to join the Corp. Forget the fact that the Corps looked like a Gestapo hate rally while beating down students on Kyle Field in 1995. Forget the fact that along with the numerous hazing charges that have been filed against them, and swept under the rug over the years, they just this past month have had one Corps member bring charges against another Corps member who apparently had been propositioning others for a little actual sodomy. Not only could I go on with more instances of idiocracy by these Khaki-clad-shaven-headed-dorks, I am sure each of you have your own stories.

The point is: We all respect West Point, Annapolis, The Air Force Academy; however, nobody respects the Corp. I imagine they are kind of the laughing stock of the military world. Just because you dress like the Army, and try and act like the Army, does not make you the Army. People at A&M donft even respect these clowns. It is not cool to shave your head and dress up. Halloween is only supposed to be one day of the year. If you want to carry guns and beat up civilians, move to Israel. It is even less cool to slobber on somebodyfs daughter on national television and call it a tradition. Dry humping 18 year old girls in the stands at football games is not cool. Not only is it not cool, it should be against the law. I know that in College Station, students are just prone to mount each other on the campus lawn, or in the middle of class, or anytime anything good happens you can just grab the girl sitting next to you and start sucking on her face. But everywhere else in the world, it is looked down upon. Especially if you are doing it on my TV. That is why we have moved the game from Thanksgiving. Because people across the nation were gagging on their turkey when in the middle of watching a football game, some boy scout is tongue thrashing some overweight co-ed during somebodyfs Thanksgiving dinner. We do not need to see burly women engaged in a suckfest every time your woeful offense manages to put points on the board. Some of these girls are in desperate need of a trip to the Clinique counter. Screw that, forget make-up, it is too late for that, just give them a veil.

gt.u.h is not funny. It is NOT insulting. It is dumb. Just imagine if folks from Texas kept talking about M&A and giggling. That would not be funny. In fact, it would be retarded. Thatfs why UT fans donft do it. Please learn. You want to lose the image of country bumpkins, of a people fond of sheep, of people that arenft stupid? Then quit building things that fall down. Quit chasing cheerleaders around with swords on national TV. Quit whooping in church. Quit whooping period. Quit putting up scoreboards for the enjoyment of dead mammals. Quit spending your Friday nights practicing how to yell. Quit telling rape jokes to reporters when youfre running for Governor. When you are filling out season ticket renewals, and the form asks for your phone #, H & W, quit putting 258-3999, Height 6f3, Weight 185. Just, collectively, stop making asses of yourselves.

Go to East Texas, tour every small town, and ask every red neck with a 5th grade education why they cheer for A&M and wear maroon. That is your fan base. This is why you are perceived by the educated masses as stupid. Nobody cares if you think your band is better. They might be louder, they might march in neat little zig zags, but they have no musical ability. The point is, nobody cares who wins halftime. Quit getting geeked up about marching bands. I find it hard to believe you stood through your high school bandfs entire halftime performance. And why? Cause nobody cared then and nobody cares now. Plus, you can hear them fine sitting down even if you do care. Why is it cool all of a sudden now that youfre in college? Men should never let out high pitched whooping sounds. Perhaps the only justifiable situation in which this can be tolerated is perhaps during an anal probe. Oh waitcI understand now.

Dogs are not ladies. They donft look or smell like ladies. Dogs eat their own feces and should be treated accordingly.

Finally, College Station is an arm-pit of a town. Quit pretending that it is a great college town. It is a town and there is a college there. That should be the end of this comparison. If you feel that life doesnft get any better than the Dixie Chicken, and enjoy being stuck in a never ending gDukes of Hazardh episode, then move there. More importantly, donft move to Austinc..they are trying to create an educated, technological, and open minded population base. Austin is, and will continue to be, the birthplace and final resting place of all that is cool.

As my friend Stephen Johnson once said: gIf the world were ever to get an enema, College Station is where you would connect the hose.h If you go to school at A&M, please donft be an Aggie.

I tend to agree with a lot of the UT guys here. I know there are a lot of aggie fans on this board that did not want to leave the Big 12 -- I am one of them.

Now that we have made the decision to join the SEC, we still act like whiners and crybabies.

Some of you are making our school look really Bad. It is time to let it go and start debating with our new rivals like LSU and Alabama.

I for one did not want to see A&M leave the Big 12 because I KNEW it would mean at least a temporary end to our rivalry. It may indeed be possible that the game returns in a few years as a non-conference game. Much like the old Texas-OU matchup was for years.

Hard to lay the blame at the feet of DeLoss when the outcome of losing the rivalry was the "most likely outcome" of A&M leaving the Big 12. I understand A&M wanted to keep their biggest rivalry game alive, from an AD perspective, just as I understand UT "punishing" A&M by not making much effort to accomodate the Aggie AD.

I really don't care why the game is gone, but it's something I am going to miss. Thanksgiving weekend won't be the same without it. Sadly the next time we face each other it will likely be because both teams are barely bowl eleigible and we offer an attractive revenue matchup for a bowl game. Would LOVE to have it be an upper tier bowl, but logic makes a lower tier bowl a more likely possibility.

We are heading to a better place. Someone just bring up the comments of the Pac12 commish when the horns "interviewed" to be accepted. The reading will tell you plenty of what anyone needs to know. For "husker," read what Dr. Tom O. said about leaving the Big 12.

You Agsters need to cool it and move on. Say whatever you want about UT but the blames fall mostly on your side as any third party can see. Change the color of the outhouse on your bonfire, start calling LSU usl and The University of Alabama au. Once you generate enough dislike for these other schools in your own student body, you will be back to your old selves in no time. We longhorns are frankly tired of this nonsense, our ID is not so tied to your school, it'just not that big of a deal to us.

Gee you make it seem like A&M is dying. You are going to have to enlighten me on these Pac12 comments by the commish when the horns interviewed. Are you referring to this year when UT turned the Pac12 down and broke OU's heart or last year when they turned down the Pac.
