I'd like to restore the original antiquing to my ring but don't want to have to lose it to Balfour for a month. Is it something a local jewler could do or is it too risky?

I've got mine in to Balfour right now getting resized and refinished. They told me 2-4 weeks. The problem with taking it to a jeweler, if they'll do it at all, is that it voids the warranty on the ring.

Football related because I wasn't wearing it Saturday and we lost.

Reload, buy two rings, when one is wearing, or needs attention, send it to Balfour, wear the second until it requires attention, then repeat.

Kinda like with cars right?

In a few months, aggie ring 2.0 is being released, and it will include an android phone, mp3 player, and garage door opener. If you void your warranty, you won't be eligible for an upgrade to aggie ring 2.0

Balfour got mine back to me after resizing in about 2.5 weeks. Cost me $10 for shipping. I dropped it off at the Association building on the 2nd floor
Also, the thing looks brand new now.

No way I'd let balfour redo my ring. It's worn down with pride!

I had my wedding band antiqued to match my Aggie ring. James Avery did it but I imagine any jeweler can do it.

Despite what you may think, there actually are benefits to having the warranty. Free resizing, free refinishing with resizing, free repair if the crown falls off (the older rings are two piece in lieu of today's one piece), complete remaking for $45 (in lieu of $1300 to buy a new one), etc.

By all means though, feel free to take it to someone other than Balfour if that's what you want to do. It's your money.

I know I shouldn't be surprised with the price of gold, but mine was $280. I guess it just is a shock.

I think they were $330 when I got mine in 98 or 99. I can only assume it's because the price of gold has skyrocketed.

2-4 weeks, but yes, keeping the warranty requires sending it to Balfour. I was simply providing information. How the OP or anyone else uses that information is up to them.

I don't know about antiquing, but I wasn't able to find a jeweler that was willing to resize mine. All of them told me I needed to send it to Balfour.

I paid over $550 for my female 14k a year ago.

I let a local jeweler re-antique my ring and it came out way too dark. I used PVC Clear cleaner to get it the way I wanted.

I had an "old timer" once tell me they would use a candle. Just hold the ring at the tip of the flame and it will turn it black, use a cotton cloth to clean the top surface. It will last for ahile but evenutally wears off, especially if you wash your hands with your ring on.

I like Balfour. Had to have my ring resized (my finger goes to the gym a lot) and I sent it to them in the original ring box that my dog chewed on. They sent me back a new one.

I had mine re-sized and "re-antiqued" by a local jeweler as I did not want to be without for a month. David Gardners Jewelry did it many years ago...I don't know if they still do it on Aggie rings. He explained that it would void my warranty, but...what could go wrong with a ring after 20 years? He did it in less than a week. After he re-sized it, it came back like it was brand new...he must have seen the look on my face as he asked if it was too black. "Yes", I replied...it's taken me 20 years to get it worn off and now I have to start over." He said "no problem," and made it look like the day I gave it to him. I couldn't have been more pleased.

Ya'll act like if the warranty is voided the Balfour SWAT team will bust in and repossess your ring. Has anyone actually read the warranty? If it's voided you just have to pay for the repairs.

I think I paid $350 for mine back in '00. I lost it in a haze last NYE. Imagine my surprise when I go to report a lost ring with the Association and see the new price. I decided to wait a year to see if it miraculously shows up somewhere. Only a couple more months to go.
