First, welcome to the SEC! Looks like A&M will join Arkansas as the only 2 SEC schools west of the Mississippi River. Baton Rouge is east of the river barely, lol. So I pulled out a map and didn't realize how far Texas A&M actually is, wow. B/c I was bored I did the number crunch.

A&M to SEC:

LSU= 367 miles
Ark= 518 miles
MS= 605 miles
OM= 650 miles
Bama= 662 miles
Auburn= 782 miles

Vandy= 790 miles
UGA= 931 miles
UF= 956 miles
Tenn= 972 miles
UK= 1010 miles
USC= 1072 miles

A&M to Big 12:

Baylor= 92 miles
Texas= 106 miles
OU= 357 miles
OSU= 434 miles
Tech= 454 miles
Kansas= 658 miles
K St= 661 miles
Missouri= 759 miles
Iowas St= 912 miles

So averages:

A&M to Big 12= 492 miles
A&M to SEC= 776 miles

A&M to Big 12 South= 288 miles
A&M to SEC West= 597 miles

The big difference is the driving distance to the SEC west schools which is on average 309 miles futher than Big 12 south schools.

Hope you guys and gals love long road trips, lol.

Dude, I-10 is right there, it all works out. Fly into Easterwood. Just don't hit any of the elk.
Incorrect, sir!

It's not about how much farther The SEC is compared to the Big XII, but how much closer it is compared to the PAC-12.

Thanks! By the way, if you add Boulder, CO & Lincoln, NE to your list that Big 12 average jumps up a bit as well.

Can't wait for some great football and baseball road trips!

Tiger...

thanks for taking the time to post on TexAgs, we hope to see you around more.

We are looking forward to many years of drinking booze and eating lots of good SEC food for many many years, regardless of distance.

You know how it is when you live too close to your in-laws? It's so much better when there's a little breathing room.

Your point is well taken, but consider the following:

OU, OSU, TTech, tu to the PAC whatever. Maybe even KU or Mizzou.

BYU to the Big 12 (or whatever)

Notre Dame, Pitt, Louisville to the Big 12 (whatever)

TCU to the Big East (maybe even Baylor?)

OU, tu to the old Big 10 (can't remember their new moniker - too much Jack and Ginger at this late hour).

tu to the ACC.

I could go on, but I think I've my point and my drink just ran dry - gotta get a refill.

Flying is a good option:

New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville, Atlanta, Orlando, Charleston, and Louisville are fun cities to visit.

Yall are out of luck with Alabama and Arkansas b/c there isn't much to do in the cities near by, lol.

We're from Texas and used to putting down the miles between cities, and it will be worth it for sure.

Now driving to Ames, Iowa? Yeah, never been there.

@aggiefrog - I did the math and if you include those schools (which makes more sense for comparison) the average distance from a&m to the other eleven schools in the big 12 was 580 miles. still quite a bit less than the average of 776 in the SEC but nevertheless....

Don't worry Ctiger, we need to get out of this area for a few weekends a year. The neighborhood around Austin & Waco is really getting out of hand.

Compare the alternative...travel distances in the Pac-12. Texas barely shows up on this map.

A&M used to play home/home with L$U for MANY years, as well as Arky...

I've made that road trip to N'awlins...err... Red Stick... been to Fayetteville MANY times. Granted it is quite the drive from Houston...

I think there are many in the Far East of SEC that may not be too aware of the history with A&M.

As far as Alabama... I've slept at the Rest Stop just went of Birmingham... what a CRAZY night that was... Bama fans owe US on both sides... Bear and Fran.

This map shows comparative travel distances for the Pac-10 (before Utah and Colorado were added) and the SEC.

personally I think travel would be easier in the Pac 12 b/c we would end up being in a division with OU, OSU, Colorado, sips and tech

A&M to ttu (south division opponent) is a long trip itself, and that game is played every year. You southern boys need to understand that us Texans are used to driving a lot to get somewhere, especially if you've spent any time out in West Texas.

It seems like Florida is almost as far from the other 12 SEC schools as we are. If you compare Florida's 12 road trips to Texas A&M's 12 trips it looks like the average travel distance would be close.
