Speakng as a pure Georgia Bulldawg, and stone cold SEC fan, I can throw a little light on how some of the SEC nation feels about this.
1) Come on Aggies. The SEC would love to have you as a part of the SEC family. You would bring a few things we like: TV audience, recruiting base, additional conference games, and additional revenue for all. And the bonus to this is the SEC offers the same to you.
2)The SEC probably does not want you to bring the likes of Missouri. Not a recruiting hotbed, and they would just bleed recruiting too. Your recruiting would see a nice advance in a couple of years, but I think it would happen. The east teams would benefit from access to Texas, and A&M would gain some from Lousiania, Alabama, Georgia and Florida-all recruiting hotbeds. Missouri is not a good TV draw either. Beside that..SEC fans like their warm climate, and don't really want to go to a November game in Missouri....the weather in Gainesville Florida, or Athens Georgia is a little nicer that time of year

iI don't think they would bring real competition to the SEC in the long run. Not a real geographical or cultural fit. A&M fills both of those niches pretty well.
3) Should A&M decide to come to the SEC, I think Mike Slive, would target Oklahoma as an add-on for another west team, and possible Clemson & VaTech, for two east teams. I like OkSt, sort of, but they just don't offer much...but Oklahoma may not go without them. In that case, the SEC would probably look to Clemson, or maybe even Georgia Tech, to even things out.
However this thing turns out, I think the SEC would welcome A&M into the family pretty well. A&M probably would understand the conference pride thing pretty quickly, and that is a very important part of the mentality. It is an "us against the world" mindset, and I kind of think you Aggies have it already.
Academically you rank right in there with UGA, and Florida too. (ahead of Baylor for whatever that is worth to you)
