On paper, Fran was the perfect hire.

I went to Coaches Night in August right before his first season started, everyone was excited and this event was in such demand it had to be held in Reed Arena, which was the first (and I think the only) time it was held in Reed. We had our own table and invited about 10 other people to sit with us.

The party atmosphere at our table was palpable, we relished being a part of this coup that few thought we'd pull off. Then Mike McKenzie (Fran's biographer) gave his remarks and the whole atmosphere changed. I was like........



Later Fran spoke and he just didn't resonate with me, or anyone at our table, or with most of the crowd. We chalked it up to us being the problem, not Fran, and he received what I would call "polite" applause. I remember leaving and thinking are Fran and his staff aliens who came to run our football program.....or are we the aliens?

The only change I remember was the great meltdown in 1999, but other than that the site looked the same beforehand and the only real difference was in the number of people on it.

I find this fascinating. What was it the biographer said/did that turned you off? Or was it just the fact that a coach ran around with his own personal 'biographer' (which I remember thinking was weird AF).

We all know how that deal turned out...

Time to open up the checkbooks for this guy. I think 1.5 would do the trick. If you don't think we can afford it, you haven't seen all the multi million dollar projects going up left and right around campus. I knew they were sandbagging evertime I went to Jolly Rolli or Deware.

I should have been more clear.

I didn't react negatively to what he said. The issue was he rambled on about stuff that had little relationship to football. Very little talk about our program or other programs, and I could barely make out what he said...his volume was low whereas the other speakers' volume was normal. It was so baffling that I even tried to pretend I understood whatever points he was trying to make. Explained in one word, he was "weird".

Fran, on the other hand, did talk a little football, but few specifics about our players, our program and where he wanted us to be, and no talk about our competition. He was vague...just like in his post game pressers after a loss when his standard reply to questions was "we had no answer". In short, I had listened to many live talks with RC, Jackie, Tom Wilson, and Emory in the past. They all sounded like football coaches, Fran did not.

I miss Gates.

Still has a special place in my office bookshelf. To remind me that it CAN get worse....
