Looch - what's your take on the ESPN "rumor" that tu and A&M have petitioned the Big 10 to take them in? If so, wouldn't that fly in the face of yesterday's tu/tech/A&M solidarity statement?

I'm far away from Texas at the moment and hearing absolutely every rumor but don't know what is real.

Any updates from today's tu/A&M meeting?

Fair enough, Mr Liucci. As one of the other (actually humorous) threads noted, "this business will get out of control," and we're seeing it happen. The one poster calling you a name is unacceptable, of course, but I didn't think the other was completely out of line. And I just felt that the reaction was not in keeping with the traditional moderation of the boards.

Liucci is probably more in the know than most on this board.

Here are my two cents from my own personal experience with folks in the know: 1) an LSU alum who admits the rampant cheating and 2) a former A&M football coach who specifically called-out LSU for cheating when I sat with him for lunch


One of my best friends is an Ag w/ an LSU alum father who is very connected to LSU. The stories I hear about the cheating were/are--frankly amazing. He would pass it off as "we are Louisiana--its different over there". Anybody who does business in Louisiana would probably agree.

I went to the A&M football recruiting presentations at one of the local A&M clubs two years in a row about 8-9 years ago. The position coach sat w/ me for lunch two years in a row.

In year one he talked about the linemen from the class but was more excited about a HS junior who was going to sign w/ us the next year. He was a life-long Ag and hailed from a poor family in a small town. When we talked about competition w/ t.u., OK and LSU for recruits he carefully alluded to LSU and the SEC in general as being something like the old SWC. t.u. and OK he could handle.

In year 2 I had to ask him why we lost the offensive line recruit to LSU? I mean the guy was committed to us up to a few weeks before signing day. The coach just went off. Said that the kid's "old car" somehow was "totaled" when it crossed into Louisiana (note: I didn't say it was in a wreck). LSU alum car insurance company results in LSU alum car lease. He again said that the SEC doesn't play by the rules--AT ALL.

He also said that for that reason alone that A&M should never play LSU again. HE SAID THAT YOU DON'T REALLY WANT TO OPEN TEXAS UP TO THE SEC TEAMS BY PLAYING THEM BECAUSE OF THE CHEATING.

This coach was known as one of our best recruiters and knew how to recruit the "old south" (e.g. East Texas). Based on our hour-long in-depth discussion I have to believe it isn't in our best interest to lower ourselves to the SEC standard.


For what its worth, I lived in Northern California for 8 years and Seattle for 4. I have friends that went to the University of Oregon. There are select schools that are every bit as loud and passionate about football (U. of Oregon and U. of Washington)as the the SEC--though not as many. For Ags that want more W's then why not play in a half-empty stadium in Pullman, Washington. Winning on the road is tough in the SEC and Kyle Field isn't an automatic "W" anymore.

Also, the West Coast is a blast with San Francisco and L.A. A game can turn into a mini vacation. I have to believe it beats Starksville.

This might be a dumb question... I know some people advocate the idea of paying players a set stipend, but what I'm wondering is, wouldn't that just reset the baseline?

Right now, it's don't give players anything in money or of value, so the University of Somewhere might say behind closed doors, "we'll give you a car if you play for us." Even if the stipend concept is enacted, U of Somewhere is still going to say, "we'll give you a car (on top of the money you'll get anyway) if you play for us."

The good news about cheating in the SEC, its easier to do for everyone (us included). We'll just have to raise our game.

By the way, Texas recruiting is plenty open for SEC recruiting. LSU frequently does a better job recruiting Houston than we do, in spite of never playing a game in Texas. I don't expect many kids wanting to move to Starkville just because they saw them play us in College Station.

Billy has to be objective and lay the facts out there, and he is FAR more in the know than any of us on here.

All I know is that the thought of having Tennessee, Arkansas, Bama, Auburn, LSU, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Ole Miss, and maybe Va Tech on our schedule every year really excites me as a fan. It certainly beats Iowa State and Baylor and Mizzou.

Exactly. People get into convoluted arguments for or against, but the only thing that really matters is games are much funner against SEC opponnents and road trips are much more appealing. Its not like a team that would go undefeated in the PAC-10 is going to go 4-8 in the SEC. Maybe the tougher schedule costs us a game or two, but its worth it to go to a home game and get a quality win against an Auburn or Tennessee in Kyle Field.

As the only SEC team in Texas....your recruiting is going to improve. I just don't see how it wouldn't be a leg up in recruiting your state.

Gee, maybe because recruits might like that OU & tu are in the Pac whatever with 3,4 or 5 top 15 teams & trips to Cali instead of Alabama, Mississippi are more appealing.

By the way, the Big XII/TexAgs should know a thing or two about players getting played. Especially quarterbacks....

The great thing about all this is that everyone, I mean EVERYONE has an opinion on how all this stuff is going to work out, when in reality NOBODY really knows.

In the end, half will be wrong and half will be right, but nobody will really care.

I think the cheating aspect is a good point. I don't want the Ags to go down that road and I don't think they would. Auburn ended up #2 in 2004 and I do not believe they are a dirty program. Quite the contrary. We can win in any conference with the right mix of talent. I do think our recruiting would gain ground on tu.

Well as someone from the SEC, I would say that we are a lot cleaner than you are making us out to be.

Again, the SEC would welcome you with open arms (and $$$) that you probably won't get with a Pac-10 deal. It also gives you the excitement of playing new foes and traveling to legitimate college towns like Athens or my beloved Oxford (instead of LA or Seattle).

And although I know the chance is small, i reiterate, it would be awesome for the SEC and for A&M if you came our way.
