>>bad call by the ref<<

How can it be a bad call when he followed the rule to the letter?

The coaches write the rules. Then they complain about them when there's a ruling that goes against their team.

One of the national pundits, I can't recall which one at the moment, noted that if officials wer to call every infraction as detailed by the rule book, there would be a holding call on every play.

Another made a basketball analogy. In basketball it is a violation for the coach to be outside the coaches box. However, no one would ever consider calling a technical foul in the last minute of a tight game if the coach is 6 inches outside the box. If a ref made the call, he would be following to the rule to the letter, but I think most would agree that it would be the wrong call.

as for sportsmanship: those who display sportsmanship are showing respect for their opponents and those who don't are showing DISrespect for their opponents.

even though for the duration of the game they are against you, you still need to respect your competition as fellow players and fellow human beings.

playing devil's advocate, how often is the "throwing the ball in the air" not called? The holding analogy is a bad one.

and I don't think Locker was being unsportsmanlike at all. But that does nto change the fact sportsmanship is not overrated and should be an integral part of all sporting events.

Overrated might have been the wrong word to use. To me, sportsmanship has been taken too far.

Some examples:

Don't kick a field goal late in the game when your opponent doesn't have a chance to win? That makes not sense to me. If that is the case, let's put a mercy rule in college football so that we don't have to watch the last part of the game.

Don't celebrate in then endzone when you score. It's a freaking game for goodness sakes. If a coach allows his players to choreograph a celebration(not taunting) then let them do it as long as it doesn't slow down the game.

I don't condone taunting it is bad sportmanship and I honestly think it works against you instead of helping you. But when my players are taunted, I tell them they can control if it happens or not. If you don't want to be embarrassed, don't let it happen. And sure as hell don't go public with whining about the way the other team acts.

Exactly but A&M is the only school with classy fans.

Taunting leads to fights on the field - hence the rule! Easy!

Sportmanship is just like any other value that liberals have destroyed!

Mutual_Friend had it right: "The OP is laughably illogical and full of sweeping generalizations. The fact that the poster is a "teacher" responsible for educating someone's children is frightening.

Sportamanship is a positive thing and should be encouraged. If you don't encourage sportmanship, you are condoning unsportsmanlike behavior. Now, everyone may have different definitions of what constitutes sportsmanlike behavior, but to argue the concept of sportsmanship is "overrated" is absurd. You might as well argue that traits like honesty, hard work, and kindness are overrated."

IMO, celebrations in general have become way excessive and are detracting from the game. (Especially in the pros) They've progressively morphed from occasional team celebrations after huge plays to very individualistic "look-at-me" attention-seekers after fairly routine plays. The most ridiculous to me is when the team is losing badly, a guy finally makes a play, then strikes a EA Sports look at me-type pose -- what a loser!

if there is anything that professional wrestling has taught us its that sportsmanship is way overrated.

if you want better ratings then trash-talk, cheat and cheap-shot, especially while naked.

Whaler: That funny because you know nothing about how I coach or teach or how my kids act during a game.

i think we should all just give a nice "golf clap" after we score from here on out. heaven forbid we yell and scream, might hurt the other teams feelings with our "excessive" celebrations in the stands.

last time i checked it's just a game. if you've never scored a touchdown in a pick-up game or done something good in whatever sport you're playing and didn't have a little fun with it, then you obviously were on the bench, not playing at all, or it was a fluke that you did well. sports were made to be fun, no one is getting hurt by a little celebration...

...except for maybe the grammatica boys!

if anyone had poor sportsmanship, it was the official making the call - he ruined the integrity of that game..not Locker

Among players of the game sportsmanship is highly overrated among fans it is highly underrated.

Agree with above.

And teaching sportsmanship cannot be rated highly enough... those lessons tend to carry over into other areas of life.

depends on what you mean by sportsmanship...

Red Auerbach was one of the greatest coaches ever. It's always said that he was a horrible loser and an even worse winner...

Now, if you're talking about playing dirty or big-time showboating then that's something different.

I'm not talking about playing dirty. I'm not sure what you mean by showboating.

Actually, I think Ware's helmet came off in the course of the play. It was just that he (Roper?) picked it up and displayed it after the play as if he was a Gladiator displaying a vanquished victim.

Give em an inch and they will take a mile. And the typical athlete of today will do just that. Let them do just one little act over the limit and the next one will do just a little more and so on and so on.

I think what Locker did was fine, in fact I think it was great. He was excited to score what should have been the game tying TD in the last minute. If you're not pumped about that you've got problems. Any rule that makes that type of reaction a penalty is a DUMB rule.

What I think is unsportsmanlike and should have no place in the game is any kind of taunting or otherwise being disrespectful of your opponent. I am not a big fan of the players who do as much talking as playing, especially in the context of an overmatched opponent. If you've hung 50 points on the other team, there's no need to rub it in, and those that do should be penalized in my opinion.
