This AM's Express has the story of his passing last evening. (Great man; wish I could get a collection of Mr. Broadhind stories).

This is a royal bummer. I miss his column and sportscasts greatly. Truly one of the all time greats.

You can get his columns in the following book: The Best of Dan Cook: Collected Columns from 1956 to 1990,” was published in 2001. Here's one of his most notable quotes "The opera ain’t over until the fat lady sings."

We lost a great one last night.

He lived a long, happy two hundred years at least. I think he was born the day Thomas Jefferson died.

Seriously, the guy was greatness. They don't make them like him any more, unfortunately.

RIP Dan Cook.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
quote:
Some were funnier, such as the time Cook interviewed a pro wrestler on live television.

The two men sat next to each other on the set when the wrestler grabbed Cook’s forehead to demonstrate a hold. The wrestler squeezed tighter and tighter until Cook felt as if he might pass out. Cook reacted the best he could — by grabbing the wrestler where the camera couldn’t see. Cook squeezed, too.

With both men in pain but not giving up, the station cut away to commercial.

Cook didn’t concede then, and he didn’t later. Then a younger employee at his television station challenged him to a sprint. Since Cook had always stayed in shape, it was no surprise Cook won as co-workers cheered.

Cook later said he acknowledged the applause, tried to act as if he had held up just beautifully — and then ducked behind a car to vomit.

Got to meet him/hang around him several times thru mutual friends. One of the best storytellers I have ever had the pleasure to listen to, man can he spin a yarn. Plus he had so many wonderful tales to tell. Was lucky enough to have him autography his book for me back in 2001. He was the genuine article - what you saw was what you got. Never a homer, called is like he saw it. An icon who leaves large shoes to fill.

Glad I got to shake your hand, Dan. RIP.

One of the best ever. The man was simply genuine - never pulled any punches. My dad and I still laugh when we talk about the newscast where he and Chris Marrou did the weather b/c the weather guy was sick. Dan laid odds for rain and described the green on the weather RADAR as shrubs. Classic.

RIP Dan, hope Benjamin Broadhind has a plate full waiting for you.

Pretty sure he was.

I've enjoyed reading the numerous columns by his co-workers the last couple of days. The man lived one heck of a life and did so under his terms.

I worked at KENS in the mid 80's and can tell you that Dan was one of the most generous guys I've ever met. I remember working the news on a Friday night. After the show, everyone under 30 was going out for some fun. I was flat broke and so I was headed home, but Dan got wind of it, shoved a $20 in my hand and insisted that I go join my friends. Wouldn't ever let me pay him back, either. Great storyteller, too. I recall that he told me that when he started at KENS he was a sports writer for the Express News and the management (I think KENS was owned by the Express News at the time) needed someone to do sports on the station. Being a new station, they were struggling to pay the bills, though. His pay? A washer and dryer! Dan was the greatest.......

One of the good guys. Always enjoyed his columns, sports reports on the tube etc. Will always remember what he had to say concerning the time Michael Jordan turned down an invitation from President Bush for dinner. Seems ole Dan didn't think too much of Jordan's turning down a personal invite from the President, and said something to the effect that "he (Cook) would walk to the White House if the President invited him to open a can of chili with him." Sorry to see him go.

Here. I remember him speaking at several San Antonio A&M club functions. One of the few reporters who gave us a fair shake in S.A.

Three things I remember about Dan Cook...

1. He came to the SA Aggie Club fundraiser every year, even when he wasn't the speaker. He had some old Ag buddies who would not mince words about his criticism of A&M (mostly in jest).

2. He ran track for U of H. I read that in one of his articles. That fact just surprises people.

3. He picked Medina Valley, the underdog, week after week in their 1984 march to win the state football championship.

I first met him when he did an article on my hs baseball team. Here I was, a 16 year old outfielder who had just hit for the cycle the day before, and the great Dan Cook wants to talk to me! I don't think I had ever been more nervous (well, except for my wedding day years later).

He was the nicest guy related to sports that I have ever met. He kept dropping by our practices & games that season, as the team was hot and was running away with the district. (side note, I played with Blake Stouffer's dad...now I feel old)

Years passed. One evening I was waiting for a table for dinner at Paesano's, and there he was. Motioned me over to his table, and asked me to join him. On a legal pad in front of him was the column he was working on for the Sunday paper. He said, ah hell, this isn't working, and asked me to read it, and what I thought about it. It was my introduction to Benjamin Broadhind and Animal Andrews.

Truly a great man who was most generous with his time. He was an original.

I loved to hear and read Dan Cook. He was always very fair with the Aggies.

I remember him saying he got offered an athletic scholarship to Rice but was afraid of the academics so he wound up at UH.

I had a friend that did the sports packages and later did the weekend sports. We'd frequently go to Dan's newscast, and I had the opportunity to shake his hand. Told him I enjoyed his writing, and he said that meant a hell of a lot more to him than this gig.

H would smoke off camera, too.
