Just as a side note, the creator of Sarge was Pete Tumlinson from Cameron. He did pass away last year. His great-niece is an incoming fish this Fall semester. She will be a fourth generation Ag.

b.astutus-Cameron born and raised right here class of '97. Well familiar with the Tumlinson family. Was in school with a Tumlinson. I didn't have a clue about this information. How do you know this?

does anyone have a copy of this?

JMH- Kin folk...albeit distant (& by marraige). In the realm of cousin to Pete's sister-in-law so not close relatively speaking. However, close enough to hear all the stories when visiting Cameron.

I proudly spent four years in the Corps of Cadets (and 3 years afterward in the US Army) and I never thought or accepted that Ol' Sarge represented me very much.

Ol' Sarge never appealed much to me.

And I've never owned anything featuring Ol' Sarge, although I appreciated and enjoyed those cartoons mentioned above in the Dallas Morning News.

Nevertheless, I'd be all for bringing back Ol' Sarge on decals and T-shirts for those who want that if we would only properly balance our school's great image by having the Aggie Dance Team present behind the end zones at Kyle Field for football games.

If Ol' Sarge turns out to be a big marketing success on our T-shirts and decals, then having him as a mascot figure on the sidelines, along with the Aggie Dance Team, every game day would be OK with me.

Showing our new SEC Conference foes what our co-educational school is now (and has been for fifty years) seems important to me, but recognizing and respecting what we have been is important too.

So, please, keep the FTAB, our Yell Leaders, our yells and The Corps of Cadets just as they have been and are, but lets also show off to everyone the current diversity of our great student body.

If Ol' Sarge is popular among Aggies, young or old, he's welcome by me to have an official place too.

But let's get some Aggie girls on our football sidelines.

After a half century, it's way past time for such female participation and I think not having Aggie girls officially representing our fine school at our football games as we enter the SEC is a huge marketing mistake: misrepresenting Aggieland to ourselves and anyone else who's cogitating about the actual makeup of today's Texas A&M University.

How did this thread go three pages without this making an appearance?

Does a leperchaun appeal to many people? How about a toad or an amorphous red blob?

The problem with TAMU is that reveille is not a mascot, and to equate her to one kinda diminishes the "respect" we give her. Essentially very few schools pull off a "no-mascot" marketing approach, even Bama plays up elephants just because of an opposing coach's words.

If TAMU was smart they would brand our football as the army of Texas and just jump-in neck deep. The army is uniform and masculine and has fairly broad appeal especially in Texas.

I have several 'OL Sarge items that you would enjoy seeing. A whiskey decanter, stickers, etc from the early and late 60's but I have no idea on how to post. i have tried and failed. Can you new arny types tell me how to do this in plain simple english and I try to do so. You will not be disippointed.

I have several Humble A&M window stickers from the 54 and 56 teams PRICELESS

Does anyone know if the creator of Ol' Sarge also designed the cartoon lumberjack for SFA?
I have often thought that the two had a similar, if not the same face.
I also like to think that the lumberjack is Ol' Sarge's brother or cousin that couldn't get into A&M. Makes some folks around Nac red faced anyway.

I've always found it interesting that as a school, we cling to an identity that hasn't been true for 50 years now. An identity that belonged to a small, all male military college that almost none of us would have gone to if it was still that same school.

Im not saying that's good or bad. Just interesting.

Probably because without that small military school background, A&M is just a bigger, richer, Texas Tech...and who the hell wants to be that?

Funny story about ol Sarge.

In the late 80s Jackie Sherrill decided that we needed a costumed mascot like other schools. So he had an Ol Sarge costume created. At some point it got into the hands of a Yell Leader who happened to be in E-2 Mascot Company. Rev 5 absolutely HATED any costumed mascots. She bit the TCU Horned Frog and would go crazy if she ever saw one. So E-2 dressed up someone (don't recall who) in the Ol Sarge outfit and let her tear it up. Then it was returned in tatters, never to be discussed again.

I know cool story bro

There's an Ol' Sarge costume complete with his head at Aggie Park in San Antonio. I like to borrow it and wear it around the neighborhood on Halloween. Does that count?
