Got to see this on Friday. Definitely one of the best documentaries I've ever seen, and certainly one of the more unique ways of telling a story. I think just as impressive, though, was the post-credits stuff. The amount of effort and attention to detail that was applied here is staggering.

And respect for those men.

You could hear in Jackson's voice how much he wanted to honor what happened without glorifying it. No simple task.

I've read some stuff about the men on the Sunken Lane over the years, but Jackson made it poignant.

more views of the sunken road for those interested in what the 1st BN Lancashire Fusiliers faced in their attack towards the German works called the Bergwerk.

Oh, yes, it was mind-boggling.

And if they are still showing it now that it is normal run, stay for that 15 minute "making of" or behind the scenes featurette. Its amazing what it reveals. One of the more striking things about the whole process of colorization was the use of exposure adjustment to recover first even very good black and white exposure of seemingly too dark and unwatchable film. By 21st C methods, such segments of film were exposure corrected to be come excellent sources in their own right--- and then a copy made to be colorized. So the preservation and enhancement of the World War I record is on two levels from the process.

Just one of the most amazing movies seen. And to hear audio of WW I vets (made in the 1920-1930's) restored is just amazing and surreal.

Agree completely. Jackson is owed a lot of credit for this. Amazing work.

I would love for him to do this with WWII footage, as well.

Finally saw it--excellent.

If you haven't seen it yet, be sure and stay after the credits for the 30 minute explanation of how they created this masterpiece.

Bump because this has finally made it to HBO.

If you haven't seen it or want to see it again, just a heads up.

Watching it tonight but recording it tomorrow because I got to it late.

I am glad I saw this thread, watched this on a whim two days ago. It was great. Probably the best WWI doc I have seen. Great footage and narration. I have a new respect for the trenches and artillery.

I really liked this film. The song that plays at the end makes me crack up. Singing about "working her ass like a maxim gun" brings some humanity to folks who in my mind were rather stilted and stuffy.

Finished it last night. Glad I watched it, great film. Really cool also to see someone of the cache of Peter Jackson heading this subject matter up.

I thought I had seen this but had not. I was confusing it with another WWI documentary "Dawn of the Red Arrow" which is about the 32nd division, my paternal grandfather's. Drove up to Wisconsin to see an early screening of it before it was released. It is on Youtube for those who might be interested.

I think he did it as an homage to grandparent or great grand parent.

Yep that is listed at the end of the movie. Mainly did it as a dedication to his grandfather. Also showed photos of a couple of other relatives of his who served though too.

I recall the theater version had a 15-20 minute "behind the making of" bit tacked onto the end, which was as fascinating as the documentary. That part isn't on NetFlix.
