Peter Jackson Restored and Colorized 100 Hours of World War I Footage, and the Final Results are Remarkable Watch

Quote:

Peter Jackson is beloved by moviegoers for bringing J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle Earth to life in "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" trilogies, and the Oscar winner is up to his usual ambitious tricks in his latest project, the World War I documentary "They Shall Not Grow Old." Jackson utilized modern production techniques to restore and colorize nearly 100 hours of original WWI footage from Britain's Imperial War Museum.

"The First World War, for good or for worse, is defined in people's imaginations by the film that is always used in all the documentaries and it looks bloody awful, for obvious reasons," Jackson told ITV News. "There were technical limitations and also a hundred years of age of shrinkage and duplication and starches. I think it's the best gift I can give at the moment, as well as this movie, to restore footage."

That's incredible. Can't remember where I saw this posted (maybe this forum?), but a lip reader narrates WWI footage:

Thanks for posting these. At the end of the video of the lip reader, as she spoke it was plain as day what he was saying but I'd never have figured it out myself. Very cool.

Saw it tonight. Overall it was great. But I was a little surprised at how graphic it was. That seems silly to say given the subject. It's a very graphic subject. I was taken aback at how young most of the soldiers were. I work with mainly freshmen students at A&M and these kids were all about that age.

Phenomenal work restoring the film and adding the audio to tell the story.

Interested to see everyone else's impressions.

Funny, based on other pictures I've seen, I thought he pulled back on the graphic aspect and conveyed the horror without using some of the more graphic photos I've seen. As he said in the post film, it was an artillery war and artillery deaths are not pretty.

My thoughts are the care and effort Jackson put into this film was obvious. The narrative was outstanding and captured life on the western front quite well. My biggest criticism would be at times the film looked too computer generated but it was still very interesting. I almost enjoyed the making of film afterword to be as interesting as the film itself. Good evening and well worth the time.

Saw it today too, was interesting for sure. One thing that was neat about is the voice overs are all actual WWI vets, gleamed from old interviews. The film work and such was very cool as well. Over all I think it was well done and worth seeing. Nothing earth shaking or awe inspiring, but interesting and enlightening.

Agree with the previous poster about the age of the soldiers being sobering. That war was a major changing of the times for the world.

Saw it tonight, absolutely amazing. Trench warfare might have been even more grizzly than frontal attacks during the civil war

For those that did not get a chance to see it yet, good news:
Quote:

Warner Bros. will launch a theatrical release in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC, on Jan. 11 and plans to expand to 25 markets on Feb. 1.

Apparently, the success of the limited release has prompted this wider release.

I saw it in 3D, which I am not typically a fan of but I thought it did add to the experience. I don't know that 2D would appreciably detract from it however.

Just got home. Very well done.

I enjoyed the "making of" after the credits quite a bit. We owe a great debt to Peter Jackson for making what was clearly a labor of love.

I enjoyed it. Very neat concept and great work done by Jackson. The interviews blended in great with the film and the added audio. Between the accents and my hearing sucking I'll look forward to watch long this at home and having subtitles. Took my wife and she teared up a few times. She did like the ending "Mademoiselle from Armentierres". Couldn't watch the making of bit, had to leave for work.

Awesome production, such attention to detail. Wish it was longer. Hopefully someday the remaining 98.5hrs of film and 598.5hrs of audio can receive the same treatment. I especially would like to see the flyboys.

I couldn't believe it when they started singing "Mademoiselle from Armentierres" in the credits. I had forgotten that song even existed. It was the only song my dad would sing to me when I was a child...and not very often.....and never when my mom was present. Made me tear up a bit.

I still have been unable to see this here in Katy, as something has seemed to get in the way each time I had a chance.

So, I just saw that it will be showing again Friday, February 1 at the Cinemark. Have not checked for other locations. I think I should be able to get to the theater on Friday.

FWIW, it appears the movie has been released on a normal schedule and is no longer just a "special one night only" thing.

If you look at the Cinemark schedule it is showing all week, so you don't have to see it on Friday if you would prefer Saturday or Sunday.
