Nuclear weapons don't do that much long-term damage, unlike something like Chernobyl, which is kind of the gift that keeps giving. I've been to Hiroshima and it's a perfectly nice town. Totally rebuilt and lots of fine people none of whom have extra appendages or deformities.

In fact, the bomb was not nearly as destructive as you might imagine based off the photos. The city wasn't vaporized, it burned. That's because most of the buildings were wood and paper. In fact, nearly all of the concrete buildings in town survived as some kind of rubble, as opposed to being flattened. There were only 4 or 5 of them, however. As for the "shadow people" whose shadows were burned onto sidewalks and stuff, they didn't just vaporize. Most of them got up, wandered around a while, then tried to jump in the river to put their fires out, where they all died.

Of course, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were tiny bombs compared to what's possible now. A modern bomb would probably do a lot more damage. But either way, as long as there isn't a core left that's radiating for years later (like Chernobyl), then the radiation levels will probably go back down to normal levels in about 20-30 years.
