Howdy Ags, I inherited an A.&M.C. Dining Hall Chair. I can't make out the manufacturer, but clearly "1936" is stamped underneath their name. This chair belonged to my great uncle, Dr. Roland Mallett '44.

Can anyone give me any insight or history on the old dining hall. Thanks!

That is great! I wish I could have walked out with one of those (I'm sure your grandfather got it at an auction or something similar as they refitted chairs). I just wandered out of Duncan with a set of AMC silverware......

Watch the movie "We've Never Been Licked" and there are scenes from Sbisa.

Movie was filmed in 1942-43

My dad, Class of '46, is in the scene with the cadets wildcatting and running up the steps to Sbisa.

You have an Ag tag, I guess we all assume you know the general information and history of Sbisa, or can look it up on Google. Was there something in particular you want to know?

A&M College of Texas Dining Hall Chair from Sbisa Dining Hall which opened in 1912. This chair was surplused at the 1936 remodel of Sbisa. This is a solid oak, bentwood chair with special military hat shelf under the seat. Pressed into the seat is the "A&M C Dining Hall" insignia. A stamp under the seat indicates that the chair was made by John Wanamaker Co. Philadelphia. This company made furniture and was big in uniforms (may have made the early A&M Uniforms?). During the 1936 remodel, the campus groundskeepers were told to take the old chairs out and burn them. This chair followed a groundskeeper named Audi Hayes home. (He lived on campus in school provided housing). This is in overall very good condition (for its age and use). It has not been restored, refinished or otherwise tampered with. T are two of these chairs currently on display in the Duncan dining hall on the A&M campus. Shipping for the continental US will run in the $50 to $60 range via UPS ground. Email if you have questions. Aggies in my family: 1906. 1931, 1968 (me), & 2005
Note: I have a WWI A&M textbook for the Signal Corps school also listed this week. Buyer pays shipping. Buyer should contact seller within 3 days of auction end. Payment expected within 7 days after end of auction. Personal checks held for clearance. No Reserve.

this is totally random i even clicked on the history board, but I just moved to the Heights area in Houston and there is a restaurant that has two of these chairs. Just happened to be looking down and saw the same brand as above.

very cool

The were told "to burn them"...

It amazes me how naive folks were in their thinking that items like this had such little meaning or value at the time...

I have 9 old A&MC Dining Hall chairs for sale. The price at the last auction was $150. Is anyone interested in the chairs?
The chairs are stamped on the side.

I'd like to see a picture of them. The original pictures seem to be gone.

I have a Sbisa red plastic cup, circa 1993.

Oh, and I have the plastic sign that used to hang outside, which says, "Sbisa dining center." Long story.

Hi Dallas,

I realize that your post is 3 years old, but do you still have the Sbisa dining hall chairs for sale?

Thanks,
Charlie
