Banned, probably for life

I found out yesterday that because I have to take Blood Thinners, probably for the rest of my life, to inhibit the formation of new blood clots, I am no longer able to donate blood unless I stop taking the blood thinners at least two or three days before donating.

They didn't say whether it was because they don't want thin blood (just kidding, I think) or if it was due to potential side effects.

I forgot to ask them if the Pernicious Anemia would also result in a ban. I suspect that is under control with my Vitamin B12 shots every other week so probably not much of a problem.

Probably several reasons. One being they don't like it when people continue to bleed after donating blood. But also, depending on the blood bank, they may use the plasma in your blood and pool it with others peoples' plasma to create a unit of plasma to donate. Or, depending on where you donate, your blood could be used to give as a whole unit. Regardless, if you give blood to someone who is bleeding, part of the reason you give it is because it has fresh clotting factors in it. If yours aren't working, and if you have residual active drug in your blood, that could make things worse.

I had Hepatitis B when I was 16. I've never been able to donate blood.

That's really tough. Hepatitis B is the worse one, isn't it? I hope that there were no long term complications.

Had donated infrequently for years, but started giving 3-4 times a year after my father-in-law died. Honoring him as he donated regularly and hit the 10 gallons mark.

Hit 2 gallons as recorded by the red cross at my last donation. Doesn't include when I've donated to other blood banks, including banking when my mom had knee surgery. But I did get a cookie.

Sucks you won't be able to continue to give. Encouraging others to donate as able.

I'm on (low dose doc supervised) TRT, so I have to regularly go for blood dumps. It's annoying I cannot just give blood.

And yeah, that hepatitis sucked. I was basically a zombie for a week with yellow eyes and skin and pissed Coca Cola color for 2-3 weeks.

It was my senior year of H.S. so I couldn't wrestle that year and missed out on a ton of fun stuff. I was so weak when I finally went back to school a month later. Before internet, so I read a crap ton of books. What really sucked is no one would come see me since they were all scared to visit. Again, no internet so it was pretty lonely.

But I was 16 so I rebounded like a champ. Heavy lifting and made weight gain shakes every night. No residual effects but even at age 50 they told me I could not donate, even though I'm the universal donor they all love to get.

I got banned due to a false positive hepatitis test. Three subsequent independent tests and not a hint of it but I am on the banned donor list and one must do a LOT of work to get unbanned.
I'm just glad I don't have to deal with that mess because hep can do slow long term liver damage.

My oldest brother was 13 years older than me. When he was in college in the mid 1960s, he got hepatitis and spent a week or two in the hospital.

The only visitor he was permitted to have was my father. Since they kept the door to his hospital room closed, we couldn't even wave to him from the hall.

I killed any remnants of it with alcohol at Texas A&M.
